Conquering a city with archers

Is this possible? I've hammered down defenses and just seem to be stuck in a loop of shooting at what seems to be an empty city? Do I have to use a melee unit to occupy it?

Hmm. Looks like the answer is yes; wish they'd mentioned that in the tutorial.

Haven't tried yet, but it was that way in Civ5.
Hint: when someone invades, kill their melee units first, their archers/catapults can't do anything to take your city, even if it's zero strength.
