Conquerors Event explained

The first civ out of the European civs, China, Japan, Khmer, Mali, and maybe some other places to make contact with each new world civ (Aztec, Inca, and Maya in 3000 BC start) gets conquerors. The conquerors are just a bunch of units, and you only get units you can build (ie if you don't have guilds when you reach the Aztec, you don't get knights). You have to meet a civ on land, so if you meet someone via workboat, you don't get conquistadors. If you can never seem to get it, it is probably because you are a) not meeting them on land and/or b) another civ has meet them first. Even if the first civ didn't get conquisadors, the 2nd civ to meet them cannot get conquerors either.

The Conquerors event is triggered when an Old World Civ (not necessarily European) meets a New World Civ in a certain area which is near the New World Civs spawn. It is only triggered the first time this happens. The contact must occur between ten turns after the Aztec spawn (1300AD) and 1800AD. The Old World Civ will then get a variable number of Conqueror units next to the New World Civ's spawn tile depending of several factors. They will also DoW on the New World Civ if the the Old World Civ is an AI.

I don't think barbarians get conquerors. (otherwise they would have gotten them a long time ago) They are neither old nor new world.

And it's not true that you have to meet them on land, you just have to meet them close to their spawn areas. E.g. if you send an Incan scout out to Brazil, you won't trigger the conquerors if you meet a caravel that way.

Barbarians can't make contact with a civ. If they could, they would get conquerors. The game counts them as an old world civ. The natives, however are neither old or new world so I don't know why Rhye classified barbs as old. There might be some error if they are unclassified.
