This thread seems as good of a place as any to share some housekeeping. Since the addition of the Downloads Database in 2006, the best way to find maps has been divided between this thread (last updated in 2005) and the Downloads Database. Some creations are in both (much thanks to
@SuperBeaverInc.), some are only in the forums (and hopefully mentioned in this thread if the predate its last update; otherwise there is only the thread), at least a few are only in the Downloads Database, or have entries there that do not link to their forum threads.
The primary challenge has been the lack of a librarian for the past 18+ years. But I'm now in a position to make librarian-style updates. What does that mean?
- Linking Downloads Database entries to their threads. This is harder when the original author is not mentioned in the downloads database, as is often the case with re-uploads, but this thread should help considerably with that, in addition to the forum search tools.
- Adding preview icons in the Downloads Database, and larger preview images in the threads, where available. Happily, these are often available in the forum threads
- Assigning accurate author information, making it easy to find, for example, all of el mencey or madviking's maps.
- Adding tags to maps to make it easier to find them. This is similar to posts #2 through #4 of this thread.
I've added several tags so far:
Africa Map - Maps of the continent of Africa, or a substantial part of it
African Map - Maps of a part of Africa, but not the whole continent
Asia Map - Maps of the continent of Asia, or a substantial part of it.
Asian Map - Maps of a part of Asia, but not the whole continent
Atlantic Map - Maps of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby coasts
Australia Map - Maps of Australia and nearby lands
Central America Map - Maps of Central America
Earth Maps - Maps of the whole planet
Europe Map - Maps of the continent of Europe, or a substantial part of it
European Map - Maps of a part of Europe, but not the whole continent
North America Map - Maps of North America (perhaps it will eventually be divided like the Europe/Asia/Africa ones into whole continent/sub-continent)
Old World Map - Maps of the entire Old World, or a good chunk of it.
@TomYo689, this is what you were looking for.
Pacific Map - Maps of the Pacific Ocean and nearby coasts
South America Map - Maps of South America
United States Map - Maps of the United States, or some of them
This isn't an exhaustive list, as there are various more localized tags. E.g. go to
https://forums.civfanatics.com/tags/ireland-map/ for Irish maps. You can experiment with the URL; all the map ones end in "-map/".
All the maps in the Civ III database have now been tagged. Did you know that we have
four Hawaii maps?
One downside of the current tag implementation is that it does not filter just to Civ3 maps, but will also include maps for other versions, or forum threads tagged with that tag. So, this thread's directory will not become obsolete. But for the time being, Civ III maps are the most well-tagged of any iteration's maps, so most of the map tags will be focused on Civ III. One exception is "Earth Maps", which also has a significant Civ IV presence.
