Conquests features comprehensive survey

I guess I should have expected that. Stupid, naive me.

Just one more reason to go and buy the thing...

(Someone tell me again about the recent trend by developers to listen to player input.)

I'm still looking for some good reasons to get Conquests. Thus far: not much. Although I'll admit the list (inlcuding what LouLong's mentioned) is more than I had expected...in some areas more than in others...

BTW, one thing that isn't really a feature (although some C3C previews mentioned it) thus it isn't in LouLong's list, but is something that does affect playability for most gamers is the issue surrounding turn length. As I recall, PTW did little to remedy this. This is one of the reasons why people still see Civ2 as the gamer's game of the Civilization series --players spend half their lives actually playing the game rather than staring blankly at a screen during large periods of time. How has Conquests addressed this? (I raised this in another thread but received no answer. I would really appreciate one as this is one of my biggest issues with Civ3...in addition to the fact that there is no scripting language. :( ).

Yes, from what I have heard thus far, C3C is a jewel compared to PTW. Although I seriously doubt an apology (or our money back) any time soon. One thing that has been done by other developers/publishers when a release overlaps another is to release a patch that gives owners of the old release (in this case PTW) the chance to upgrade the core changes to the new release (C3C). So, in this case that would mean giving players the option of upgrading PTW so that it includes the core changes to Civ3 included in C3C (including fixes, etc.) but not anything unique to Conquests (like scenarios, units, ect.). That way, your version of PTW will still have some value and if you want the other stuff included into Conquests, you will have to go and buy it. This is the software industry’s equivalent of an apology, IMO.

Then again, at $20 bucks a piece, Conquests isn’t really much of an economic strain considering the far greater amount you’ve spent upgrading your PC just to get Civ3 to run at a reasonable rate.

Personally, I’m just holding out because I’m not exactly happy with Civ3 to begin with and there are things that could have been easily tweaked/added in Conquests to make the game better but from what I can tell, weren’t (and yes, I’m taking into account that it is just an expansion –and no, I’m not referring to my requests necessarily…just in case anyone gets it into their head to imply that).

BTW, hate to sound like a broken record but how’s the turn rate in C3C compared with Civ3/PTW?

AFAIK turn rate hasn't changed on the old difficulty levels..
I'd be more than happy with a real appology (not just admiting that they did it wrong, which they already have), after all, I still had a lot of fun with PTW for my money, even if it should have been better

An apology would mean nothing to me, since there is no guarantee that they will not repeat the same mistakes in the future. Heck, I won't even think of buying Civ4 before I read lots of good things from experienced players in the forums. In fact, after the disaster of the original Civ3, I reverted to Civ2, didn't buy PTW, and only started seriously playing Civ3 whith C3C.

The unfortunate thing is that Firaxis has us drooling all the time since no one else (that I know of) has produced a better game of this type (CTP could have balanced the things but it hasn't). So, when you play without opponents you can do whatever you want with the ball.

It's a real pity that we have to wait literally for YEARS after the first release in order to get a decent version of the game. And even now, serious flaws (like the corruption bug) limit our enjoyment.

I can't imagine any other computer game with so fanatic friends during more than 10 years. Also, I can't imagine any other game where time limits and release date pressures should be more pliable. We don't even care about the graphics and there is no serious competition! And there always an already big fanclub anxiously waiting for the next release. What could be more relaxing for a gaming company ? With this in mind, they should have been always producing at least bug-free releases. Alas, the exact opposite is happening.

That's what you get when there is no serious competition :(

Although release dates are based on factors that I do not fully understand, the fact that there is almost a complete lack of competition (meaning Firaixis has a "civ-opoly" over the market) should make for a more flexible product without necesarily being a very good one. Monopolies in software have never been a good thing (I can hear Bill Gates hooting with laughter as I write this).

AFAIK turn rate hasn't changed on the old difficulty levels..
Dogdammit. (My anger is purely for show. I actully expected performance to remain the same --just like almost every other part of the program.)
