I just picked up Conquests tonight at EB, installed it and had the same problem. After reading this thread I started browing the art files and looking at the files on the cd and noticed an executable called "civ3goldsetup.exe".
I also had downloaded the trial version of Civ3Gold, and then purchased it via TrialMedia. I uninstalled everything relating to Civ3, and made sure all folders were gone. Then I ran the civ3goldsetup from the conquests cd. Incredibly, Civ3Gold and everything with it was installed on my system. It runs and works fine. So then I installed Conquests over that.
Now, assumably, I have the retail-boxed-bought from the store version of Civ3Gold, as well as the retail version of Conquests...and I still have the same problem.
At this point the only solution I can think of is to borrow a copy of the original Civ3 from a friend and install that, then Conquests on top of it. Maybe its a problem with going from gold to conquests, since they both include PTW (from what I understand).
**update** I managed to get ahold of an original Civ3 cd faster than I expected, and installed it (after fully removing all Civ3 stuff entirely), then installed Conquests. Problem is still there. It looks *slightly* different, but its the same problem.
I have no idea what to do, but at least at this point I should have enough information to make Atari look at the problem instead of passing the buck.
