Considering starting a PTBS 24 hr game based on Earth 1000 AD

I'm fine with cultural on, if we're playing normal speed (or slower ?) this time it's pretty hard to get since it put's a target on anyone who's seen to be heading that way.

I don't particularly like going for it - but it does give another option and flavour and path to victory for someone who knows how to defend it... because they're going to get rushed if they try for it and aren't already dominant militarily.

Congrats to the victory Dan and thanks for the organisation Arckon. The end of the game last weekend hit me hard since I finally managed to finish the dual install on my PC which is now superfluous

Looking forward to the next game. Will you announce it here?

Btw, how advanced were you guys in tech?

I had just gotten steam power and was working on Railroads. I was going to have it in two turns.

I plan to have the map loaded up here this weekend so people can play test it. Will probably start a new thread also.

Do you guys want to be able to raze cities or not?

I had ironclads finally defending my coast from Dan's frigates, and was building the railroads to move my machine guns around to defend if he ever came after me again... we'd been in a stalemate between him and his useless and irritating Egyptian pawn for a while.

I swear - if razing cities had been allowed, I would razed that stupid city a long time ago, and then Dan would have taken his Nile city for himself, instead of Egypt hanging on by a thread. :P

I don't think I would have kept the city myself anyway. The reason I gifted the city back to Egypt was because it gave immediate strong cultural pressure to you (Mali) and Zulus. Egypt was just a safety buffer for me to keep my own important culture cities as far from all enemies as possible. Remember that I was after cultural victory anyway. But of course I would have conqured and razed your city SW of Egypt long time ago if city razing had been allowed. Now I just harassed you & Zulus and tried to get some coins from pillaging.

Technologically I just got Physics and was somewhat behind IanDC. Was producing my first Destroyers, too.

Tech wise I was behind on Philosophy, Divine Right & Democracy to Dan & JM but had reached Plastics (had to go there for my offshore oil rigs) & artillery & was a turn off Radio.
Other areas I was in the process of upgrading to Destroyers & had a battleship about to launch, some Marines built & the first 4 tanks were out. Broadway was nearly finished (I was right on the edge with happiness with my research obsoleting Ivory, Whales & Furs).
Was still only about a 3rd of Dan's power :crazyeye:

I think razing cities on generally, I don't know if you can protect individual cities in the mod ? like capitals or core cities ?

I had quite amount of units, but maybe the exprerince of the units also has to to with power. Because I had to wage war against someone all the time, I had strongly promoted units. And from one city I was producing fresh units with 15 exprerience points (level 4?).

For me it was still a long way to tanks so Ian must have been quite advanced. I had good GNP all the time but due to the war and the necessary unit production I had only few improvements and couldnt get the most out of my good economic base data.

The initial idea was to take Agemo out together with Mongolia. That would have allowed for a much faster war I guess. But when Mongolia was switched to AI and dropped out of the war things became much more difficult. Also one of the important findings for me in the course of this game was that being an island based power you can keep up with GNP for a while but you will be inevitably behind in MFG. This might be something to keep in mind for the next game's set up.

I agree the island starts present some problems, my mfg was pitiful compared to the big boys but I don't think I reached beyond 50 land tiles in the game. On the other side you get early security as long as you make sure your in front in the naval race. Lizzy though is better off than Japan as she does have the traits for the situation with all those coastal tiles producing 3 commerce & the mass of specialists giving great value in Rep with the Philo trait.
I think the charm of the world map is the different starts & thus strategies that it offers but it does need stressing at the start of the game that all is not equal so people come into the game with their eyes open.

OK, I couldnt figure out a way to have all 24 civs and let people come in at random positions.

So what I have done is move the civs out a bit more and make every starting position strong (ie not a bad place to begin to get going). Every location has copper and iron nearby and plenty of food production. I think almost all are on rivers too.

I moved the Carthaginians to N America, roughly where San Fransisco is. The French were moved to S Australia and the Arabs to Brazil. The Celts are in far eastern Siberia and the Koreans down around Bangkok.

I know that those are not historical positions, but one can simply rename their civ to whatever they want anyway.

IanDC, I am sorry, but I think allowing for mid-ocean travel is necesary for game balance, besides, I think that these routes were taken far before telescopes were invented, such as the Polynesians and Vikings were known to have done and many believe that the Phonecians, Chinese and Egyptians likely did as well.

Please take a look at the map and tell me if there are any glaring errors.

Also, we can allow city razing if you guys want to. I just thought it would make it a bit easier for the civs in built up areas to not have to rebuild their cities every so often. But it looks like it was more of a hindrance.

I put in a bunch of barbarian cities as before, but if we allow for city raizing this sholdnt be such a problem.

Its odd to me that CivFanatics wont let you upload WBsave files, lol.

Anyway, here is the link:
http://www.online-storages.com/913252

And the password to download it is:
archon6

Remember that you have to have the latest Earth24 mod to use the file.

How about we have a gentleman's rule that capitals can't be razed, but all others are fair game?

Couldn't load the save in Warlords, not in v2.00 nor in v2.08. Gives an error: "Cannot load version 1936876886, expected version 200 or lower". What does it mean??
