Contacting other humans in LAN game

My wife and I are playing a LAN game with each other and several AIs.

However, we can't seem to officially 'contact' each other for the purpose of trading/negotiating etc. Clicking on each other's names on the right-hand side of the screen like we do for the AIs produces no result.

We're newbies, apologies if this is obvious. We're using the Steam version of Civ 4.

Never mind - figured it out, that once you click the other person will see your name start flashing, and then they accept the offer to talk/negotiate by clicking.
