Continents?

I would estimate that at least 1/3 of the time I go to play a game on continents, I get stuck with what is more or less an archipelago map -- either 5+ civs on 1 continent or all 7 on 1 continent with another small mini continent somewhere else. Don't get me wrong, I love an archipelago game as much as the next guy, but if I wanted to play one I would have selected it when choosing my map.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I agree: I had a friend over to "demo" the game, set it for Continents, and lowered the number of AI to 5. I wanted him to have plenty of time and space to get use to the game. Sadly, we have already met ALL 5 of the AIs in the Classical era on the same continent as us; he's getting a crash corse in diplomacy and war mechanics. This must be a small bug of some kind.

I've probably only had one or two games where continents actually gave me more than one continent.

choose the Custom_Continents map and you can set how many continents will be in the map.

onedreamer, you can choose the Custom_Continents map and you can set how many continents will be in the map with the ADVANCE menu ?

Thanks;

when I select a custom game, with a huge map size, and select custom continents (so that each Civ is supposed to have their own continent) I have yet to find that I do not share one with another Civ.

No matter how many times I try and start a game like that I just can't get a continent to myself.

Something seems to be wrong.

when you choose Custom_Continents a new option will be added at the bottom (after sea level, temperature etc), which is how many continents you want in your game. You can choose random (but this is pointless since it will be the same as the normal Continents map), a number of your choice or 1 continent for each team. This last option, as anticipated by Morgan, doesn't seem to work well. In my current game, I started with 4 teams of 2 players and chose one continent per team. Instead we are 2 teams on the same continent.

nope, with the custom game menu, if I remember correctly :)

I am not sure if the world builder allows you to alter the other Civs start location, I will need to check, but I did want a more 'insular' start to the game to practise a little more on developing some strategies without the potential problems of neighbouring Civs.

It's not a continent, but you can get a large island to yourself with the custom game's "islands" maps. You and all Civs can have a large starting island, and the option of other extra large and small islands if you want to do something a bit like "Terra" but with your own starting land.

I'm one of the people that would probably be accused of being a "fanboi" in certain threads, but I see this issue all the time, too. It seems, regardless of my setup, I have at least one other civ right on my doorstep (even large/continents with six total civs). The only thing my efforts towards more space per civ accomplish is to create huge barbarian problems.

I don't know if it's a big enough problem to qualify as a bug, but it's certainly annoying (I know I could use the Worldbuilder, but I don't want any unearned information about the world).

On a similar but different note, how do I get to choose how many civs will be on the map with me?

I go through 'play now' and usually choose continents. Unlike most here, I find that I get stuck with maybe half the civs, and then find another continent with 3 or 4 more civs (usually well advanced by the time I find them).

Very stranely, i was going through my laptop, cleaning off bits and pieces, as you do in order to keep your machine optimised, and I notice that CiV 4 took up 10gb of ROM.

YES THAT IS TEN as in DIX (if you're french) and i think diez in spanish.

and yes that is GIGABYTES, and in gigabyte in any other language I think.

What's up with that?

Unisntalling/ reinstalling to see if it was an inexplicable one off...

BLOODYBATTLEBRA, you can't choose the amount of Civs you are up against in "Play Now!" -- instead go to "Custom Game" and change some of the AI players from AI to Closed. This removes the player from the game.

My Civ4 install is 1.4gb footprint, by the way. Good luck with that! :)

PS: Welcome to CivFanatics! :)
