Control Definition Error?

Uh... hey just did a fresh install and it seems to work now. :mischief:

I just deleted the actual folders once it was done installing (including the one in documentss/My Games/). I haven't tried it with my saves/replays/maps back but hey it seems to work now.

Sorry for taking up your time. Have one on me.

No, it's not entirely on you. We know there is another issue in one of the pak files that only seems to manifest for some people, so your help has been very useful in tracking it down.

I also experienced similar problem, except the Civ V loading process hangs (screen becomes blank), when I go to the task manager (ctrl alt del) for some strange reason the game becomes unstuck, but gives all the "control definition error".
The .ini change did NOT help.
For info, I have all Civ 5 DLCs, win7 x64, an AMD 7950 and a 2560x1440 display. I have re-installed the O/S and Civ (on a new SSD) - so Civ V is the only app running (with steam).
Please help ! The game is unplayable ! Everything worked fine before...
Edit: after PC reboot the game doesn't hang but I still have the errors in spite of the suggested .ini patch.
Also, after enabling logging there are errors in lua.log, not being able to load "othermenu.lua" and "premiumcontentmenu.lua"...

When I try to load up a saved game, I get the attached runtime error. I made the changes on .xml file and the annoying UI messages dissapeared, but then happens this. I also made the changes on config.ini...

Thanks everybody in advance.

I am having the same problem. Verify cache does not work, deleting UI folder does not work, deleting my documents/my games/civilization 5 does not work, the changes suggested here remove some but not all of the messages. I am pretty certain that the problem is that the game is running in touch mode no matter what mode you actually select (DX 9 or DX10/11) as the touch controls info pops up on startup. I am on Win8 (no touch!) but have seen this problem for people on win7 as well. Running in Win8 touch mode does not work. The errors pop up after load screen into game (ie: just before the "click to continue" message), and again just before the click to continue after loading a saved game, and also occur in game when I select the trade route info screen. Worst of all it occurs when I click multiplayer-internet/LAN and results in a game crash, meaning that I can't even play the game!

Just to reiterate, unless the touch mode controls dialog is supposed to pop up in DX9 or DX10/11 modes, I think the problem is that the game is always starting in touch mode.

That's very possible, Actually the only solution is to delete everything and start from scratch :(

Still waiting for a 2k patch. . .

Hello. New input maybe?
Click multilayer to join a game. The back button to go back to main menu does not work.
Bunch of errors just hitting play game in single player. Bunch of errors going to advance setup.
Most of which has been mentioned here. All installed and played through steam.

Some new stuff as far as I know from my skim through the thread.
I have installed civilization V and played it with no problems mentioned in this thread.(no dlc) No problems.
Later I installed and played civilization: Gods and kings with no problems mentioned in this thread.(no DLC) No problems.

I recently obtained gold edition from steam which includes all DLC. Now I have everything except the latest expansion "Brave new world". Now after installing I now have all these error for font, broken back buttons etc. Scenario error messages. Joining a multilayer game causes a previous image with mostly blank lobby with 1 person in as Washington.

Edit:I have not played the game anytime recently. This may have occurred from a patch as well.

hi all

i had the same problem described by other users in this topic.

i haven't tried any of the suggested action, but i choose to proceed with the good old method of "erase everything and restart from nothing", although I have seen that for some it did not work (maybe it was not done properly?).

i solved the issue by doing this:

- uninstalled CIV V from Steam (using the normal option in steam client)
- MANUALLY deleted Civ V and Civ V SDK folders from the \common directory in Steam folder. these two folders were there after the uninstall with a lot of files in their subdirectories
- MANUALLY deleted Civ V folders in Documents\My Games
- Re-downloaded Civ V from Steam

Now the game work flawlessy and i can finally play BNW :goodjob:

just for info my pc config is:

Win 7 Professional X64
Intel 3930K
Asus RIVE X79
32gb DDR3 Avexir Core ram
SLI 2x Nvidia GTX Titan with latest WHQL drivers (320.49)
Samsung 840PRO 256gb (with Win and system/program data)
Seagate 1tb 7200.11 (with Steam and Civ V installed)
Seagate 2tb 7200.12 (with data & backup storage)

hope this help :D

I registered just to post a fix which worked for me and does not require a redownload.

1. Delete "...\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\UI", "...\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\DLC\Expansion\UI" and "...\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\DLC\Shared\UI".
2. Verify Game
3. Play

I do not have BNW, but I do have G&K.

I get these errors, they make the game unplayable. This is the worst expansion I've ever bought for Civ, ever.

I've tried;

1. Deleting and reinstalling from Steam
2. Deleting my save folder
3. Deleting the UI folder and verifying

I recently moved my game files to an SSD, and my graphics card is an AMD 7850HD.

It actually seems to be a BNW initialization error. The hang I got at first launch was not a fluke, it happens every time the cache is cleared. It does not happen with G&K (remove the expansion2 folder and launch = aok). It is not tied to the 2560 screen resolution. It does not seem to be a corrupt steam download: reinstalled the game from different steam servers worldwide, saved each download, they are binary identical. It really looks like denying a Firaxis bug would require extreme fanboyism.
As clintionio said, for some people the expansion is unplayable: it would be nice to get a fix ASAP.

Did this and I no longer recieve any popups in any areas I mention in my previous post. Thank you for the fix.:goodjob:

:nuke:I never did like that they don't keep stuff in the same directory and why an uninstall wouldn't get rid of everything....:nuke:

Interesting, I will prove this tonight and post results here.

Hi guys, I think I may have found a good fix.

I had your very same problem and I've done every other fix mentioned (like the one to Styles_Expansion2.xml). I don't know if such fix is now required, but still here is how I solved everything.

I noticed that inside my game folder was a file called "update.cmd". I've just started it by command line (I don't know if double-clicking on it works the same) and... everything's good now.

No errors, no graphic glitch, no problem with menus (hotseat and the likes) and no "not-working" buttons.

If you don't have such file, here it is. Just extract it in "...\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V\" and run the content (update.cmd).
