So, what do we want to do, research-wise?

Mono-Theo-Educ seems a very reasonable alternative: Mono gets us Cathedrals, which are cheap, help bolster our Republic happiness, and add to our massive Cultural powerhouse. Theology then gets us the chance for Sistine, and Education will help kill off the Great Library, giving us a much better chance of catching up with Portugal.

On the other hand, Bablyon already has Monotheism. And if Russia builds the SoZ, that's a lot of units it will have for attacking us with. So maybe Feudalism is better- it's easy to trade for Monotheism and Engineering, and gets us Pikemen to help defend our borders.

Though, by that latter token, going after Gunpowder would get us a jump on setting up our musketmen, which would give us a *much* better defensive wall. Remember that we can't build barracks, so we can't simply upgrade our old units. And given our deficit-running, we'd be better off with quality in units rather than quantity.

What say y'all?
 
Sounds reasonable. Not being able to upgrade is indeed something to consider. Going straight for Gunpowder seems best. Let's hope we have some saltpeter in our lands (fingers crossed). It seems very possible China will have it in one of their desert towns.

edit: I looked at the save and we have a good chance of getting saltpeter. We did settle real close to China (closer then 2 tiles), which will have them PO-ed and it will eventually lead to war with 'm I'm afraid. Tough border to defend. He's still polite ATM but we should make a point of staying buddies.

The prebuild in Alesia is for Sistine, I assume. With this in mind, I decide to buy Monotheism from Babylon for dyes, 391g, and 39gpt. I just hope we can somehow buy Theology before the prebuild completes.
Upon buying it, even Portugal doesn’t have it yet. This may be difficult. If we can build up some gold, we can research it in about 18 turns while running a deficit. We can also MM Alesia to delay the prebuild. I think we can do it. I also trade Henry one of our dyes for 230g.

IT- Oy, somehow Alesia riots. I thought I had it covered. Whoops. Well, that’s one way of delaying the prebuild.

Conclusion

Things looked a little bleak for a while with the prebuild, but they are looking good now. If we maintain our research, we stand a good chance of getting Theology before Portugal. We have a few markets that will come online in a turn or two, so our negative gpt should be no problem at all. We have a galley in the south that can sail through Aztec waters and try to cross the ocean again, if we wish.

I just looked andvruss's report, and I forgot about the sighting of the border by Babylon. The galley I moved south was probably intended to go there. Oh well. We can always build another.

Good work, KB- I took a look at andvruss' save, and forgot to mention that we needed to deal with the pre-build in Alesia. Good to know that there will be no question about us getting the Sistine Chapel, given that we can't touch Sun Tzu, Knights Templar, or Leonardo's (all militaristic).

And if we get Theo sooner than Portugal, then we might be able to get a two-fer with Feudalism and Engineering out of them- remember to trade to Portugal first, as they have the GL and would otherwise get it through that with our first trade.
 
I got it.

Given that Kaiser chose theology for Sistine, I will continue this push by going for Education. I will also concentrate on cultural buildings after towns get Markets and aquaducts. I would like to see if we can flip some towns to us, and cathedrals and later Universities will be very useful anyway.
 
Preturn: Make a few adjustments. I also am going to raise Lux for a bit to allow us to get the wonder in less than 11 turns if I can. I also want two towns to put more cultural pressure on the lone Russian town and China.

Re: Space's Comment: I think Segusio is far enough away to not cause China to attack. It is Civ distance 3 even though it is only 2 moves. I have been able to settle towns like that and not have problems.

Portugal now has Theology. They must have traded it from a civ we do not know like Sumeria - They definitely did not research it themselves. This weakens our Trade value on theology and means Sistine is no longer guarranteed. You may want to trade it around, or maye not. I think that holding off trading is better so fewer civs can cascade to sistine. If we miss it now I will be bummed, but there was no way to get it faster. We get it in 3 so as long as it isn't built in the next 2 turns, it is ours.

I had two aggressive flip towns near china planned. See the map below. Both settlers are nearby. For the marsh we need to clear it first. The other settler is a turn away in Lindum.

I think we should trade Theo for what we can- the computer is going to focus on Leo's, Templar, and Sun Tzu's, none of which we can build.

If we're already working on Education, I think we should just push up that side as fast as possible and trade for the gunpowder side as available or necessary. Since we can't even compete on the 3 militaristic wonders, we need to absolutely focus on the 3 non-militaristic wonders: Bach, Smith, and Coper.

Space, If we are going to trade, then trade in the pre-turn. The value of the tech may plummet quickly.

One civ has only one of Feudalism and Engineering and doesn't have Monothesism (Germany??) That will help get both Feud and Engineering with a single theology trade.
 
I don't know if I'll be able to play before I leave for a week of skiing tomorrow afternoon, but I'll try. This game is fun and shouldn't take too much time. I'll definitely look at the trading possibilties. :thumbsup:

By hiring a clown and a sci in Alesia and scis in Burgidalia and Isca, I can drop Lux down to 10% and Science up to 40%, knocking Education down to 10 turns.

Begin moving our Spearmen forward. In a Republic, there's no point to having MP in our interior cities, especially when we have so few units anyways.

460 AD (1): Entremont Horsemen->GS. Ratae Library->Courthouse.

Continue moving Spear forces south to the under-defended Chinese border.

Our trade deals are over, so time to renew.

First, talk to Babylon. Dyes and Theology will get us Engineering, and that's all they have, so we take it. Engineering and Theology then go to Germany for Feudalism. Portugal then gets Dyes in exchange for Furs and 60 gold.

Portugal is up Chivalry and Invention, and Germany equals us, but everyone else is down at least one tech.

4th Lux means I can drop some taxmen; lack of gpt deals means we're at +40gpt. We can drop to +3 gpt to shave a turn off of Education, which doesn't seem worthwhile.

IBT: China move units to defend its border cities, and a few of its units walk into our territory.

Finish clearing out the swamp for our city-to-poach-China-with, but I'm going to delay a bit to get our Spearmen into position. For that reason, switch Monguntiacum from a Worker (which we have plenty of) to a GS.

Meet the Koreans just SE of the Germans. Oh, great, an Indigo border right next to Dark Blue. That'll be distinctive.

China still refuses to even talk, so our wounded GS attacks a Chinese spearman and wins, letting our Horseman kill the warrior that was underneath. However, now both of our units are wounded. Hurry the GS in Monguntiacum for better defense.

IBT: Chinese units keep marching through the swamp towards us. I'd feel sorry for them if there weren't trying to kill us.

Well, then. AndrewN- it's all up to you, now. We've been fighting the Chinese pretty well given our lack of units; we can keep picking off their offensive line one at a time and hope they don't overwhelm us, or we can push real hard for a meatgrinder. Personally, I recommend just getting to peace ASAP- even though we haven't seen any Horsemen yet, China does seem to have its horses hooked up, and as soon as it gets Chivarly we'll start seeing Riders.

We have Education, and that can be spread around as you see fit. Portugal already has it (damn it!), but at least that means that the GL is definitely dead. Bab will give us Invention for Education + 190 gold, which seems our best chance to get Invention. As for Chivalry- Russia will give it to us for Theology, Germany will give it to us for Education. We don't need Chivarly, but it might be nice for getting the Chinese to the table; it's your choice whether we do, and whether we should strengthen a weak neighbor or strengthen a strong distant country in order to get it.

After Alesia finishes the Cathedral, it should start on a University as a pre-build for Copernicus.

And once China has gone to peace, consider planting that poaching city we were going for. It's supposed to go on the clear space between the marsh and the flood plains.

Inherited turn. We have a pikeman and 29 spears. Thats not a lot for 29 cities. Our attacking force consists of 4 GS, 4MI and a horse. Currently I see 2 spears, 6 swords and 4 MI near Lindum and 1 sword, 1 spear and 1 warrior near Monguntiacum. Rutupiae is still guarded with a (reg) warrior.

Most of our towns are building something big. Swap Curovernum and Augustodurum to pike, Lugdunum to MI

Banking is due in 3. Navigation is available from Portugal although I am not keen on swapping with them as they are already researching faster than us.

Copernicus is due in 5. We have no backup if we miss. Babylon and Luanda (Portugal) are also building it. Babylon dosen't seem to be a threat as it can't be putting out many shields, but Luanda might be a problem as it was part of a cascade.

The Portugese are researching at a furious pace. They are not only researching the bottom branch faster than us, they are researching the top branch faster as well. I can only assume that they are in contact with the 3 remaining civs we haven't met who are also advanced. Printing Press is tempting for the contacts.

I didn't trade for chivarly. It didn't seem necessary.

China is feeling the cultural pressure. Segusio had another border expansion last turn and I have seen a huge number of units going into Paoting.

Russia is trapsing spearmen through our lands. I let it go as I am in a good mood :D

I hit F9 to look at out palace and I can build a bit more. Odd. I add a third floor to the main palace.

Whoa. Once again, Portugal is a researching powerhouse.

Well, once we have Nav, we can hopefully send out some ships to go find these massively-advanced friends of Portugal, and show them the glory of the Celtic lifestyle.

Question to folks- what should we go for after Banking? Should we go back and pick up Music Theory so we can get some GA building in on J.S. Bach? Or should we press on for Economics and try for Smith's? Or skip them both and go for Printing Press to trade contacts and get us closer to Democracy?

Given out massive shield output- Alesia is a monster builder- I lean towards picking up Music Theory, as it's the one the most civs could get to soon.

Russia and Babylon seem to have Saltpeter; China has two sources; and the Aztecs got none.

Once we can get Navigation, we should trade it around as much as we can. We have no interest in Magellan's- where are we going to sail to, now that Portugal has explored the world? But everyone who has Navigation is one more power we can trade our Dyes to. On that note, there's a second Spices near Ratae that no one has bothered to hook up, yet.
