COR1: The un-Militaristic Celts.

Cor 1... The summary. We completed two Great wonders, just think of all those wasted shields :D

Inherited turn.

We are building Newtons (in 6) and Shakespears (in 7). Newton's isn't a problem as we are the only people with tech, but shakespears might be a problem. I'll hold off with TOG until we have Newtons.

Alesia is building a cav. I'll let it finish and then start another prebuild.

We are researching at 100% and still making 208gpt, but we lose 144gpt next turn from Portugal. Steam is due in 3.

Ratae Coritanorum cav -> university

IBT
Deva marketplace -> cathedral
Sumerians start Newtons :(

1) 1060AD
Gpt drops to 57.
TOG is out there so I sell it round. This has upset me, it looks like Sumeria sold it to everybody in the interturn. Deep breaths. I wonder off and read a book for a while and come back relaxed.
Sumeria is up Nationalism and Babylon is up Medicine so the only good news is nobody got steam.
I begin to migrate the workers towards Entremont for railroading.

IBT
Dyes come up for reoffer. Babylon offers 9gpt. I turn it down for now.
Alesia cav -> palace
Agedincum bank -> musket
Glanum cathedral -> university
China start shakes, Portugese starts Newtons

2) 1070AD
Science down to 40%, steam next turn.
Babylon gives us 13gpt & 30g

IBT
Renegotiate with Protugal fors for dyes & 8gpt
Steam comes in, start industrialization. The Iron works message comes up :)
Augustodurum cav -> musket
Curovernum musket -> musket
Lezoux university -> bank
Babylon starts Newtons
We loose out Gems

3) 1080AD
The Iron Works city is Bananaville, first ring from the capital :D. I am in a much better mood now.
Bananaville switched to Iron Works.
We have 3 sources of coal, but only one is connected (under Lezoux).
Rail net started.
Ind due in 7 @ 100%.
MT to Ottomans for gems and 14gpt
I like money in our pocket rather than anybody else so I sell steam round.
Sumeria 269gpt + 182g (all their money)
Portugal 155gpt + 7g (all their money)
Babylon 53gpt + 114g (all their money)
We are now making 483gpt at 100% science. As far as I can see we are the only people with any money :)
Rush courthouse in Arausio and Tolosa
Rush University in Ratae Coritanorum, Lindum, Burdigala
Rush Library in Noviomagus, Gergovia and Rutupiae

IBT
Deases strikes Bananaville :(
Burdigala university -> bank
Ratae Coritanorm university -> bank
Tolosa courthouse -> university
Lindum university -> bank
Rutupiae library -> cathedral
Noviomagus library -> aqueduct
Arausio courthouse -> aqueduct
Gergovia library -> aqueduct

4) 1090AD
More rails started
OK, who fortified a galley at sea? I only noticed it because a unit moved near it.

IBT
Hittites (annoyed) want to swap territory maps. Sure
Lugdunum university -> bank
Cataract0nium aqueduct -> bank

5) 1100AD
Dispand spearmen in Curovernum (knocks a turn of the musket building there)
Newtons due in 1, Shakes in 2. This is the correct order as the Shakes have been building longer in other civ's and the cascade could take out Newtons.

IBT
Newton's completes :)
Entremont Newtons -> musket
Verulmium musket -> musket
Lapurdum university -> bank
Our borders expand at Lapurdum and they now touch the Russian city of Smolensk

6) 1110AD
More rails :)

IBT
We complete Shakespears :)
Camulodunum Shakespheaes -> musket
Our incence deal expires.

7) 1120AD
Babylon and Sumeria have swapped nationalism and medicine. We are still level with Portugal.
I give Zulu magnetism for incence and 20gpt

IBT
Desese hits Bananaville again

8) 1130AD
Galley dispanded in Segusio
Science to 70%, indust due next turn.

IBT
Industrilisation in, electricity started, due in 7 @100%
Entremont musket -> factory
Augustodurum musket -> factory
Axima colosseum -> factory
Durocortorum harbour -> library

9) 1140AD
Swap everything that makes sense to factories.
Rush factory in Lezoux, Isca, Alesia, Lugdunum, Richborough and Verulamium
Portugal is still broke. Sumeria and Babylon have a small amount of money, but nowhere near market price so I make no deals.

IBT
Korea wants to swap territory maps. OK.
Alesia Factory -> Universal Sufferage (Agricultural)
Lugdunum factory -> bank
Richborough factory -> colosseum
Verulamium factory -> musket
Isca factory -> bank
Lezoux factory -> bank
The people :love: me. I plant some shrubs in the garden

10 1150AD
Spearmen dispanded in Verulmium
Factory hurried in Entremont

Notes

Our income has dropped from 400+gpt to 278gpt this turn. I'm not sure what deal expired (sorry).

We have the monopoly on indust but nobody can afford the market price for it. In terms of research I am aiming for Replacable parts. We are short on workers so a bit extra from them would be useful.

I started US. I don;t know if we want to fionish it or ues it as a prebuild for sonething else (TOE anybody?)

We are short on defensive units so I am trying to produce muskets and then moving the spears back for dispanding. I really miss barracks

Our forces are 33 workers (+2 slaves), 2 warriors, 26 spears, 1 horse, 9 pikes, 11 muskets, 2 cav, 4 Gallic swords, 4 MI and 2 trebs. OK, who has fortifies the trebs now. I have just played 10 turns and never noticed we had any.

Our culture is 25596, Sumeria has 21052. Looks like a culture win is out of the question. We have 11% of the world (Portugal 12%) and 16% of the population (China 12%) I'm surprised Portugal has more land area, it dosen't look like it on the ground.

The save

Good turns. I was pretty confident we were going to get both the wonders. We were far enough along at the end of my turn to get them.

A minor MM Tolosa really could use a aquaduct before the factory is created We don't want to wait 34 turns for it.

Any reason for not getting Medicine? I think someone like Sumeria could pay full price if you throw in Medicine (and 100+ gpt) I am guessing. We need medicine for TOE so it is worth trading for. Since we have broken our monopoply we can then trade for another 100 gpt and get back to the 400 gpt which will allow us to rush coal plants, factories and such. We should also try to have universities in all towns. I wouldn't worry as much about trading away monopolies if the price is high enough as we will have another tech to trade in 6 turns. Every turn we wait the AI is not giving us money like it should be :D This does break down if we can't stay ahead in research (at which point your rule of getting full price does take over), but with us taking all the gpt from the AI you are slowing them down in research allowing you to keep ahead.

Also build Universities in any city that doesn't have one.

So my advice is to trade indust with Sumeria for Medicine and 117 gpt and then Trade with Babylon for 108 gpt, and the worker.

I would even trade Steam power for the Zulu's silks and smaller gpt.

Agreed that Rep Parts would be a good tech to go for provided we can still get TOE. I think Alesia's start on US is best for a prebuild. We probably get techs fast enough that Alesia wouldn't build the palace in time (20 turns and we can always slow it down).

I did think about medicine but I went for pure GPT deals so that we could carry on reseacring at 100% whilst hampering the research pace of the AI's. I am aldo a believe that all the money in the game is mine and the AI's are only looking after it for me :D . Med will always be there for a future trade and we aren't in a position to build our hospitals yet.

The last time I checked the AI's had no money (no where near 100gpt) but I didn't check the last turn so that may have changed.

You're probably right about Tolosa, I just swapped any city with a reasonable number of shileds to factory with the intention of rushing as many as possible.

The techs have been turning up every 6 to 7 turns at the moment

2 questions. I am playing right now.

1. Are we allowed to get nationalism?

2. About the Iron Works. They are about to be completed in Banaville. However, Banaville is only pushing 9 spt. IRC, that would only make the production 18. But if a built a factory and coal plant, would that double that production?

1. I can't see any reason why not.

2. A factory and coal plant will also only give 18spt. IIRC an Iron Works/factory/coal plant will only give 27spt. Like the science doubling wonders it only doubles the base shields.

On the other hand, with a bit of work to clear the jungles, Bananaville will be a powerhouse.

Conclusion

We should keep building more Stock Exchanges. I have two prebuilds going. In Alesia, Uni Suff should be transformed into the ToE in three turns. In Richborough, the palace should be changed to Hoover’s once it comes in from ToE. We’re looking pretty good.

THE SAVE

Ok, I have got it. I will work on snagging Hoover.

Hopefully, I can also build some Infantry for border cities. I may also disband units that are now getting hopelessly outdated like spears (since we can't upgrade) once they are replaced by Infantry - but only after using them as "flip resistance" in cities on our border.

If we are running high science, Stock exchanges aren't immediately pressing, but I will get them in what cities I can. With Smith's, they are no maintainance and will be useful if we need to do a cash run.

I will try to keep our culture high as well. Don't think we can get a culture victory, but we do have "flip competition" on our borders and definitely don't want the flips to go in the other direction. It also defends against an AI growing huge and getting huge in culture (a real threat in deity games).

Preturn: There is money to be had.
Electricity, spices, and world map for 468 gpt and 766 gold from Sumeria (they had 474 max gpt)
Electricity and Industrialization for nationalism, 24 gpt and 38 gold from the Hittites
Electricity for Espianage, and 1 gold (I think we can do spy stuff when at war?? Is this true?) from the Ottomans
Electricty for 80 gpt, 50 gold and world map from the Babylons

I keep Corporation for myself.
We do not have communism or Fascist. Communism wouldn't be bad for Police stations. If I can get it for older techs later I will.

I spend some money to buy all the Universities I can and increase science to 100% to see if I can get the tech a turn earlier.

We are back up to 544 gpt at 100% science. I also rush the factory in Segosio - otherwise it would be tied up for 50 turns at no growth. It needs a Harbor and Aquaduct more than a factory, but switching would lose shields so I rush instead. We now have a good income for now.

Also high priority will be hooking up the rubber. We are defended vs spears and AI Cavalry could take out all our cities which if I remember correctly we can't take back.

Since I am at 100% sci, I will build Colosseum's first to Max our Culture. I would still like at least one flip :rolleyes:

IBT: China demands Coal. Since we are the peaceful people from the planet basketball, we give it to them (sorry obscure ref). In essence, China is telling us that we are risking war by having too few units. (Therefore by the variant I am forced to build defenses? :D )
Lapurdum: Bank->Granary

Our palace expands.

1305 AD: Hmm... We also seem extremely short on workers. We have a lot of unworked squares that cities are using. I switch pretty much every city with 10 or less shields in its box to worker to try to alleviate this.

Even if I try to stretch our science, I cannot shave off a turn. So I lower science to 60% instead.

1315 AD: Alesia switches to TOE with a loss of 98 shields. We overshot. :lol: Set science to Atomic theory.
Infantry is moved to a border town. Spend our cash improving our culture.
I get communism and 43 gpt from Babylon for Rep Parts and 96 gpt and change from Sumeria
Zulu will give silks, and 58 gpt for communism.
I get 16 gpt and all their gold for Espianage from the hittites

IBT: Russian troops have been trampling through our lands all my turn. I am almost thinking of giving them an ROP to get them to stop clogging our roads. Will want a decent defender in all towns before doing that though. We get TOE for Atomic Theory, and Electronics. Research set to Sanitation so our cities can grow again.

Rupartiae: Aquaduct->Colosseum
Doroctorum: Aquaduct->Uni
Gergovia: Aquaduct->Uni

1350AD: I switch a few cities to Hospitals. More will want to build them as they grow.

Notes:
I concentrated our resources on Culture and building workers.

For workers, we now have nearly twice what we started with plus I switched to democracy which means we are now improving things at 3 times the speed we were at the start of my turn. Even so it will still take time to improve all the squares in our territory. We have a lot of mountains.

For culture, most towns either have all 5 culture buildings (temple, lib, uni, cathedral, colosseum), or are building the last one. The ones that still need a building are:
Richborough (building hoover), Segusio (just finishing up a Uni and needs Colosseum afterwards), Duroctorum (just starting a uni & needs a Colosseum). I was planning on rushing the Uni in Duroctorum. If you don't want to do that, then switch it to something more useful than 100 turns of Uni building).

Hoover comes in in 4 turns.

I left this for the next player, but I think our towns are well enough defended to give Russia an ROP through our territory. Otherwise they clutter up our roads and get in the way.

I didn't build as many Infantry as I would have liked. One for the inner towns and two for the borders seems about right. I would keep some older units to make sure cities do not flip.

The Save

Whoa.

Okay, I just want to congatulate the whole team here- we're doing a damned kick-ass job with this: a constant tech lead, massive income from trading it around, and we're going very strong despite not being able to go to war. I'm pleased as punch that we're doing so well!

goal
Well, as was rightly remarked a cultural win is not very likely this gae has Space Race written all over it. Sooo, we need to emphasize beakers. The way to maximize those is through uni's, people and money.
So yes, I am going to rush the Uni (in due time) and try to MM optimizing for food and money. All the time looking for benificial trades.

pre-turn
Boy, this game takes long to load...
I have a good look around. As usual when the human player is not being aggressive the world is a peaceful place. Only Germany, Sumeria and Korea are at war currently.
Our scientific position is excellent thanks to the ToE. the only thing around which we don't have is Facism, which we don't need.
Sell our WM around to civs that have some money, making a total of 80g.
I see no reason to change the build orders. :thumbsup:

IT
The Hittites want to MPP, err, no! An RoP? Hmm, they seem to have broken a deal with the Portugese before, so no, I don't see why.
Portugal declares war on the Hittites! :lol:
Hrrrm, 4 Red cavs (Babylon) are near our borders.
Segusio Uni -> Worker

1355AD - turn 1
What is Hammy up to? He lacks Rubber, but our sources are not near him. He also seems to weak to be aiming for China. I don't like it.
Shortrush the Uni.
The science slider can't go back yet, it's still on full blow.
I *do* sign the RoP with Russia. She might be a useful partner when one of our other neighbours get nasty.

IT
The Babylonian Cavs enter our terf an seem to be aiming for our workers. Darn that I can't ask them to leave.
Ratae Cor Granary -> Inf
Lindum Granary -> Court
Nemausus Granary -> Art

1360AD - turn 2
Move the workers away from the Bab Cavs. It is as I feared. We can't ask Hammy to leave without threatening with war.
I move some of our troops near. If I know the AI, it'll go after the least defended city, so let's confuse it.
We have a trading opportunity with the Hittites since they are at war they'll pay a bit more for our lux. The trade route is pretty save so, Dyes to the Hittites for 15gpt, 30g and a WM.
The Hittite WM gets us some more cash.

IT
Our Furs deal with Portugal ends, I renegotiate but I can't get it for less than Dyes and 14gpt.
The Bab Cavs move further into our lands.
Entremont Hospital -> Inf
Lugdunum Colosseum -> Worker
Verulamium Court -> Inf
Bananaville Hospital -> Bank
Augutodorum Inf -> Hospital
Agedincum Colosseum -> Art
Isca Granary -> Court
Axima Stock -> Inf
We lose Gems, the Ottoman don't renegotiate.

1365AD - turn 3
Sci Meth is already around, so I buy the Gems from the Ottoman by selling Sci Meth for Gems, WM, 8gpt and 27g.
The slider can go down a notch (Refining still in 3 turns) we now make 527gpt.
Shortrush some more buildings.
Check the cities within range of the Babs, each one should have at least 4 defenders and at least 1 Inf.

IT
The Babs have another stack of Cav heading our way.
Alesia Hospital -> Inf
Cor1-Hoover.JPG

Richborough Hoover's -> Hospital
Burdigala Granary -> Hospital

1370AD - turn 4
I wonder whether Babylon is thinking about a 'surprise' attack on China... :lol:
Just to be sure I cover a worker who can't get away in time with an Inf.

IT
The Aztec wanna talk, OK, an MPP and RoP, nah, I don't think so.
Sumeria comes knocking: MA against Germany? No buddy.
Entrmont Inf -> Inf
Cataractonium Colosseum -> Inf
Lapurdum Inf -> Art
Cutovernum Hospital -> Inf

1375AD - turn 5
Refining due next turn, but only when science stays at 90%.

IT
Sumaria and the Ottomans sign an MPP.
The Babs keep on moving south, they are next to our Capital, but they seems to be passing through. I move an extra Art in just in case.
Rifinery comes in, we start research on Steel.

Bananaville Bank -> Stock
Agedincum Art -> Inf

Lezoux Wall Street -> Inf (our income jumped up 50gpt at 10% tax)
Noviomagus Harbour -> Market

1380AD - turn 6
Steel in 5 turns at max research.
Sell ToG to Germany for WM, 10gpt and 18g.
Shortrush some more buildings.
Oh dear, we have NO OIL. The Chinese and the Babs *do*, eventhough they don't know it themselves yet, and it is in very remote areas too. No hope of lucky flips. :(

IT
The Zulus and Portugal sign an alliance against the Hittites.
The Babs continue to pass through.
Entremont Inf -> Inf
Alesia Inf -> Bank
Camulodunum Agency -> Hospital
Tolosa Granary -> Worker
Arausio Market -> Granary
Dyfed Granary -> Court
We lost our supply of Incense.

1385AD - turn 7
Sell Espionage to the Zulus for Incense, WM, 5gpt and 2g.
Hawk WM around, no progress sciencewise with the AI, that's good.
F11 shows we are number 1 in all the important statistics.

IT
Korea kill the germans, there goes 10gpt.
The Babs continue south, but take an eastern turn. Towards a lesser defended area? Or the Russian colonies?
Richborough Hospital -> Stock
We get the Battlefield Medcine message.
Augustodorum Hospital -> Inf
Curovernum Inf -> Bank
Isca Court -> Stock
Lezoux Inf -> Inf

1390AD - turn 8
Nothing really noteworthy. Battlefield medicine isn't that useful to us in this game, but maybe we should build it just for the culture. I'll leave that upto the next player.

IT
Russia and Sumaria sign an MPP.
China and Portugal MA against the Hittites.
The Babs zoom in on the Chinese troops on our turf. :)
China finally removes its troops, more so because of the Hittite war than the Bab threat I think. The Babs totally ignored our undefended Workers.
Entremont Inf -> Inf
Verulanium Inf -> Hospital
Bananaville Stock -> Inf
Agedincum Inf -> Stock
Cataratonium Inf -> Bank
Lapurdum Art -> Hospital
Glanum Inf -> Hospital
Durocortorum Uni -> Granary

1395AD - turn 9
The slider can go down a notch, Steel in 2 for 420gpt.

IT
Korea and Portugal MA against the Hittites.
The Babs have reached Chinas borders but stay out. A stack of slow units move in.
Bananaville Inf -> Inf
Segusio Granary -> Colosseum
Axima Hospital -> Inf
Lezoux Inf -> Inf

1400AD - turn 10
I begin disbanding spears in cities with corruption, since our core is churning out troops is a good pace.
Steel is due next turn, maybe Radio should be next and then build some radiotowers, I've never bothered before, this could be the game for it.
Wine can be got from Korea, I'll leave that to the next player.

And finally the save.

No oil? Yeah, was kind of worried about that. We need oil for planes and tanks- all useful for not getting stomped- but do we need them for Spaceship parts? I'll have to check.

Thoughts on the future-
* It looks like German lands have been razed- I might check in to see if there's anything interesting to poach. A free lux or two would be nice; oil would be great.

* Militarily, our big concern needs to be China. Russia is small, and we can always get an MPP with Babylon if Russia gets nasty. China, though, is bigger than us and has no neighbors. The good news is that with our rail net, we can respond to attacks pretty darn quickly. I'm tempted to get workers to fortify some of the more open areas of our border so as to slow any initial Chinese advance- I'll take a look at the map and our worker availability tonight.

* Once we hit 4th age, where should we go for tech? Computers seems the best initial choice- the best defensive unit in the game, along with a Wonder that ups our research rate. If the United Nations weren't on a different branch, I'd say follow the Computer branch all the way up for the wonders and eventual Robotic Plants.

I'll pick the game up tonight.

Corrado,
Something to consider for techs are robotics and fusion. We need both aluminum and uranium for the space ship. If we learn where they are sooner, we have more opportunities for poaching; or determining who to trade with. If a civ has two of a resource, we can even gift the tech and trade right away - that way we get first dibs and they won't trade it away when they gain the tech on their turn. Or sign an ROP and connect the resource up for them to trade to us.

If we do trade for a resource, a pure gpt deal might be in order (especially if we turn off the auto-negotiate) and also don't negotiate down to the last penny rather add 5-10 gpt. That way they will let the deal continue as long as they own the resource.

After you make the above deal then trade a tech for as much of the gpt back as you can get in a seperate deal.

[Edit: The one case we are in trouble is if no country has two of a given resource. In that case we need to get them to go to war.

I recently thought of a really sneaky way to do this without going to war ourselves. I have not yet tried it so I am not positive it works, but its the only idea I have.

What we do is build two towns that are really close together and gift one of the towns to each of the two civs that you want at war. I know the AI will declare war if the human builds a city too close to one of their cities. Will they also declare war with another AI in this case as well? If yes, the two may very well declare war vs each other.

Not sure if anyone else has ever tried this???

That is a very interesting idea Greeb. Certainly its worth some research.

Just to let you all know, I'm going to be away for the next week or so on Spring Break, so if my turns come up I'll need to be skipped. Good luck!
