COR1: The un-Militaristic Celts.

Preturn: My 2 year old son hits space before I can look at anything. Not that it matters.

IBT: The Hittites have been destroyed.

1555 AD: Start looking to see what deals I can get.
China will pay Iron Clads, Oil, 3079 gold, 170 gpt for combustion? Deal. I know we weren't really trading with them, but that is too good to pass up. I don't think we really fear China.

I switch some towns to produce a few unit types we don't seem to have much of - Artillery, Flak, Tanks - mostly the Wealth towns. We have plenty-o-cash.

MM a whole bunch of cities. For example, I get Bananaville over 100 shields so it can build a tank every turn.

IBT: Portugal and Babylon sign peace.

1560 AD: I sign an ROP with everyone to improve relations and because the ones we care about (china for example) already have one. Change Banana to palace for a turn to start building UN.

IBT: Watch Babylon's invasion force get slaughtered.
Get Fusion and start Rocketry for Aluminum.

1565 AD: We have 2 urianium. Note that with ROP's with the entire world, I am working on getting more than 1 defender in every city. Pick up another 77 gpt from China and 69 gpt from babylon. We are at +56 gold at 90% science (up from -213 at start).

IBT: So babylon lands more fools in the same spot...

1570 AD: Bananaville is now up to 132 shields from 70 odd at the start of my turn. It is maxed for shields and will build the big stuff. For example; UN in 6. In general, I have been switching around worked tiles, getting cities to be good multiples (like Entremont is now 90 shields and builds infantry in one - by irrigating I was able to work 3-4 more mountains increase its shields by a decent amount. Also designated towns are not given priority on any squares and tend to be smaller. This is how I like to handle the overcrowding of a tighter build - powerhouse towns get all the privledges of tiles to work.

IBT: And Babylon dies on the same spot.

1575 AD: Yow! china now has 443 gold per turn available. They probably traded the tech I sold them. I sell them another (mass production) for that gold.

IBT: Zulu and Babylon are at peace.

1580 AD: More MMing of cities.

IBT: Sumeria and Portugal are at war.

1585 AD: Build 2 more towns in holes of the AI land.

IBT: Portugal and Sumeria fight.

1590 AD: Not much

IBT: Get Rocketry and start computers.

1595 AD: Hmm... No aluminum... But we can Poach it by being pushy. I found Aluminum Poachers and disband/rush a library. Our cities are not a bit crowded...

IBT:

1600 AD: Rushed university in Aluminum Poachers.

Notes: We are at 90% science with 600 gold incoming. We have 2 modern techs while all AI are missing Flight and Motorized transport.

Rush culture in Aluminum poachers every other turn! This is important as if we don't get ahead in culture we don't get the aluminum

Berlin must already have culture even though the border hasn't expanded. Otherwise the aluminum would have been in our territory this turn (so they have 3-9 culture). Here is a picture:

Cor1_AD1600.JPG

I built up our military. We have plenty of cash and I wouldn't want to lose cities in a suprise attack. I did not yet reach my goal of 2 defenders in every city.

The Save

Very nicely done, Greeb. U.N. in 6? Whoa.

So, no oil, and no aluminum? Man, we're just not ready for modern times, huh?

a space oddity, you're up! Don't forget to start a SETI pre-build in Alesia, as that's the best city for it.

Space,
I didn't do a full readjust of the cities when we got TOW (also some cities may have grown). We may have towns with 60-79 shields are best off building TOW (with 80 I would build artillery in one turn instead).

Not necessary or anything. Entremont also might be able to go to 100 shields for a tank per turn.

I said I was doing MM'ing but not exactly what. I include this small bit to explain what I am talking about (in part for lurkers learning the game):

-------------------------------------
Aside: Late game MM'ing basics

For anyone who hasn't thought about it before, one can maximize ones ability to build units as quickly as possible by adjusting towns to build in a more optimal manner than just picking a unit to build at random every time a town comes up. I can use our current situation as an example:
First, you identify what units you want and note their costs in sheilds. For simplicty, I will assume we want artillery, Bombers, Tanks and TOW.

Now Artillery is 80, Bombers 90 (It may have been fighters that was 90 - I assume its bombers for this discussion - if bombers are 100 shields then you have only 80, 100, and 120 to worry about (unless you want fighters), Tanks 100, and TOW 120 shields.

So towns with 80-89 shields are best off building Artillery, 90-99 shields build bombers, 100-119 build tanks, and 120+ TOW.

Now from 60-79 shields, we can build anything in 2 so we will want TOW, 50-59 are best off building Tanks, 45-49 Bombers (in 2) or TOW (in 3), 40-44 artillery (in 2) or TOW (in 3), 34-39 would be tank in 3. At a certain point its stops mattering much what you choose, so you only need to do this for your best cities.

The second step is to realize you can easily adjust the number of shields in a town. Therere are a few primary ways I use: Switching which town works which tile, and mining/irrigating, and adding workers to a town to make it grow.

So for example, if I was at 59 shields and I switched from a mined grassland, to a mined bonus grassland, I can now Build TOW instead of tanks. Or I could use one of my workers just lazing about and switch irrigation to a mine.

One can of course cycle through all the cities to do this, but an alternative is to use F1 and then sort cities by production (you do this by clicking on the number of shields generated - you can also sort by what you are building which is tremendously useful)

You then go from largest producing city to the point where the exact shields don't matter as much. This way you are spending time on the important cities first.

My final point is that you may not always want to choose the optimal choice. If you have a stronger need for tanks, then I set most towns to tanks; try to MM to 100, 50, 34, 25 shields, and only set those that are not close to these numbers to artillery or something.

One nice thing is you don't have to do this every turn; if you do it once in a while (like when you get a good new unit), you still get much better results than you would otherwise. I would guestimate that doing this gives a 25-50% increase in the number of units you produce per turn.

I was realizing I have seen a lot about early game MM'ing, but less so about later MM'ing. These ideas are not new. Still they are useful. The above is a mix of my own thoughts and what I have read elsewhere. (for example, sorting by production I haven't seen, though I am sure it exists somewhere).

This is just the basics. There are other things like partial rushing to make up for missing shields, adding in future growth and worker actions to the calculation, etc.

End of Aside
---------------------------------------------

pre-turn:
Switched Alesia to pre-build.
Shortrushed some buildings.

Monguntiacum Police -> Stock
Eboracum 'duct -> Colosseum
Alu poachers Uni -> Temple
It gets a cultural expansion and... we already poached the Aluminium! [dance]
And even more good news:
Cor1-Oil.JPG

turn 1 - 1605AD
Move a settler to a free spot at the magic distance 2 from the AI cities.
Rush Temple in 'Poachers to keep the pressure on.
Rush Temple in New Age.
Found New Burdigala, it starts a Temple.
Deal Spices to Korea for WM, 11g and a Worker.
Hawk WM around.
Upgrade the Fighters.

IT:
The sumerians make a brave attempt to raze the Portugese city with Alu for us, they fail.
Aztecs and Babylon sign peace.
Deva Bank -> Dock
Durocortorum Court -> Hospital
Gergovia Court -> Bank
Alu Poachers Temple -> Cathedral
New Age Temple -> Granary
The people love me for the second turn in a row... yawn. ;) :love:

turn 2 - 1610AD
Found New Cataractonium, it starts a Temple.

IT:
We lose our Silks and Incense.

turn 3 - 1615AD
Trade Electronics to the Zulu for Silks, Incense, WM and 1gpt.

IT:
The builds continue power buildup and money.

turn 4 - 1620AD
Computers in 1, science down to 70%.

IT:
Computers come in, start Space flight. (pun intended :D)

turn 5 - 1625AD
Switch almost all builds on our mainland to Research Labs.
Scientists help to get the number of turns needed for SF to 6. (@100%science for +336gpt)

IT:
Major pollution, always a good sign. :)

turn 6 - 1630AD
Start the first Mech Inf.
The slider can't go back yet.

IT:
Zzzz

turn 7 - 1635AD
Play around with tax, police, engineers and scientists.

IT:
The portuguese come calling, we trade WMs.

turn 8 - 1640AD
Shoot, the settler that found a spot to settle gets trapped in AI borders, the city expanded influence. :(
Notice China has Flight, time to sell it to the Ottoman, who have money. Darn I click just left of the 'D', you know what that means... :rolleyes:

IT:
I don't want to be here just yet, oh well, such is life.
We get some nice cultural expansions.

turn 9 - 1645AD
Turns out China has not sold to the Ottoman yet, so I sell flight to Otto for 123gpt.
Sell flight to Sumeria for WM, 532g and 67g.
The slider can go back a notch too, SpaceFlight in 2 at (1.9.0) at +733gpt. :D
Hurry Colossea in around our Aluminium.

IT:
The Zulu's have a friendly chat.

turn 10 - 1650AD
Ok, the slider can come back some more, and we're back building troops.
SpaceFlight will come in next turn, Alesia can switch to Apollo after that. Bananaville is building SETI because it has a higher science output and both builds will be quicker this way.
Alesia is on a temporary diet. Be sure to MM after the polution of Veru is cleared.
From now on it's just full steam ahead and get those SS techs!
Enjoy!

Nice turns, and getting our own source of oil is just an added bonus.

If the AI's have only just got flight I can't see that there is anything to stop us winning now :)

Aluminim and Oil. Very nice. We are looking very strong. This should be last turns for everyone.

Corrado should be able to get the spaceship started and we need seven or so more techs IIRC, so 35-50 turns - perhaps less when we get the research labs.

I have it and should finish it tonight. On turn 7, we have 3 parts in production, have Apollo and SETI, are working on the Internet, and our rivals have just started to make it into the Modern Age.

-turn: So, we've gone from controlling no oil and no aluminum to controlling both? Sweet!

1655 AD (1): We discover Space Flight. Quite frankly, *any* research we choose from here gets us closer to some component of the SS.

I'm choosing Miniaturization for 3 reasons: First, it leads to the Internet, which is a free Research Lab in each city. Even though we've already built a bunch of RLs, we don't want anyone else getting the Internet and trying to play catch-up. Second, it leads to a city improvement, and we can always use those. Third, several of our rivals are Scientific, so there's a chance that someone will get Ecology-my second choice- for free, which means we can trade for it.

And, as with the previous players, I'll only note builds that aren't army development.

Noviomagus Commercial Dock->Airport. Arausio Research Lab->Airport. Gergovia Bank->Factory.

As a note: We cannot build the Manhatten Project- it is Militaristic. Not sure we'd want to, anyways.

Diplomatic Standings: Sumeria and Portugal are still at war. Korea and Babylon are still at war. And that's it.

Russia will pay 4 gpt + 70 for our Rubber. Trade Metallurgy (!) to the Aztecs for 6 gpt + 22.

Alesia wastes 100 shields, but switches to the Apollo program.

1660 AD (2):

Cor1apollo.jpg

Alesia begins SS Cockpit. Lapurdum Research Lab->SS Docking Bay.

Intense amounts of pollution springing up. Maybe I should have gone for Ecology. Oh, well.

1665 AD (3): Burdigala Research Lab->Nuclear Sub. Tolosa Research Lab->Stock Exchange. Axima Research Lab->Jet Fighter.

Gems deal expires; Ottomans now want 89 gpt for it. That's a bit more than I'm willing to hand off, and they don't have nearly enough money to make selling them Motorized Transport worth the Gems. Oh, well; it's not like we're worried about happiness.

IBT: Korea requests an alliance against Babylon. We hand them pamphlets on constructive non-violence.

1670 AD (4): Lugdunum Research Lab->Battleship. Rutupiae Research Lab->Bank. Monguntiacum Research Lab->Airport. Durocoturum Commerical Dock->Research Lab.

Lots of WLTKDs end.

1675 AD (5):

Cor1seti.jpg

Bananaville begins SS Engine.

Segusio Research Lab->SAM Missle Battery. Arausio Airport->SAM Missle Battery.

Sell Motorized Transport to China for 210 gpt + 220 g. Sell it to the Ottomans for 85 gpt + 60. Ottomans get Computers for free.

IBT: Babylon and Korea make peace. Babylon joins Sumeria against Portugal.

1680 AD (6): Military production only.

IBT: Ottomans join the anti-Portugal alliance.

1685 AD (7): We discover Miniaturization.

Tough decision now- Sumer, Korea and Babylon all have yet to hit the Modern Age, and it's a ~60% chance one of them gets Ecology for free. But Mass Transit would be nice, and getting to Modern Armor before China would make things more secure... still, for anyone else to get Modern Armor, they have to get Ecology first, so better to go for techs we can trade for Ecology. I start us researching Superconductor for 2 more parts. Due in 5 at -73 gpt.

Entremont begins The Internet. All coastal cities switched to Offshore Platforms.

New Agedinicum Granary->Library. New Eboracum Library->Marketplace.

With nearly 10,000 gold, decide to rush nearly all projects in the New World.

IBT: Russia joins anti-Portugal alliance.

1690 AD (8): New Lugdunum Cathedral->Marketplace. Lapurdum SS Docking Bay->SAM Missle Battery. Eboracum Granary->Marketplace. New Entremont Marketplace->Colloseum. New Alesia University->Marketplace. New Camulodunum Airport->Library. New Richborough Harbor->Library. New Verulamium Library->Marketplace. New Gergovia Aqueduct->Library. New Augustodorum Library->Cathedral. Aluminum Poachers Granary->Marketplace. New Burdigalia Cathedral->Marketplace.

1695 AD (9): Alesia SS Cockpit->Police Station. Tolosa Offshore Platform->Stock Exchange.

1700 AD (10): Bananaville SS Engine->Military. Monguntiacum Airport->SAM Missle Battery.

Okay, here’s where I pass it on. 3 Spaceship components are now finished; 7 techs to go to get the other 7 components. Only China and the Ottomans have even made it into the Modern Age; neither has Rocketry.

A few strong trades are out there- Korea will give Wines for some very early 3rd age techs; Portugal and Sumer will pay a little for Motorized Transport; and the Ottomans will pay ~1500 + 270 gpt for any modern age tech. The Ottomans are 2nd best in tech, though, so I’m not sure that such a trade is worth it.

Militarily, we are strong compared to everyone except China, whom we are average compared to. I suggest that we stop building our military and switch over to Wealth in order to keep our tech research at maximum without having to sell techs to eventual rivals. We lose 247 gpt with 0% tax; that’s nearly 1000 shields of Wealth, which means if we can put ~20 cities to wealth, we can break even with no tax. We also have ~7500 gold in the bank, so we can still keep up 100% science for a while without a problem.

I expect we’ll be launching the space ship on my next turn.

I am guessing the game will last a bit more than 3 players (Andrew, Andvruss, Kaiser) and that the third player will finish it off with an extra turn or two played. Unless there is a skip, I don't expect to play a turn.

AndrewN hasn't picked it up in 2 days, and apparently hasn't been heard from in other threads. Andvruss, it's yours unless AndrewN shows up.

Kaiser,
You around to take the game?

[edit: Since Kaiser's last post was before spring break and he hasn't given his I got for 2 days; I am going to assume he needs a skip or swap.
====================

So I got it and will play tonight and possibly tomorrow. Kaiser, if you are back in time you can simply swap with me.
