Corp failed to spread?

I was surprised tonight to discover that it was possible for an executive to "fail to spread" its corporation. When does this happen? No, there wasn't a conflicting corp- I was spreading Mining, Inc into a city with Sid's Sushi. This is the first and only time I've ever seen it happen... and was also the only time I've ever tried to spread both corps on the same turn. Does correlation equal causation in that observation? If not, how and why did it happen?

I believe it is the same with a religion. If the population increases, the likelyhood of a corp spreading decreases.

If you load the saved game from before it failed and you try to found the two corps in another city, does the second corp fail to spread then as well? Does it matter in what order you spread the corps? If you can consistently reproduce this then I think you very well may have your answer there.

If that is true I'll be surprised and, as is often the case, disappointed in the documentation. The Civilopedia notes the chance of failure in spreading a religion; it has no such section in the entry for corp exec.

It may be very well just me thinking out loud, but if I am not mistaken I remember a corp failing to spread on me once or twice.

It just happened to me again- wasn't the same turn as the previous corp (and the order was reversed) so I am assuming that it has something to do with these offices being founded overseas. Either that or there was a huge run of coincidence in that I never saw this while I was spreading on the mainland.

Not much experience with corps, but I can imagine that if the city is overseas it might not be connected to your trade network, and hence have no resources available? Probably not given that it is late game, but it might be something to check...?

I think it has to do the the other civ's civic?

As Shurdus says, it's like religion, sometimes it fails to spread (put it down to executive incompetence). Don't be discouraged, just keep sending executives, it WILL spread eventually. Of course I am assuming that you aren't sending these execs to an AI running SP.

If another civ is running state property (SP) the option to spread a corp is greyed out if I am not mistaken. That means that you cannot even burn an executive in that city. If you see a 'fail to spread' message there is some other mechanic going on because it means the corp might have spread although it failed to do so.

Corps can fail to spread if there is an another corp in the city already, does not matter if they compete or not.
If they compete then the old one will be replaced with a successful spread. If they do not compete then if the spread is successful then the city has both.

SP = no corp spread

Corp spreading can definitely fail. it already happened to me more than once.....

I suspect that is the same mechanism than the religious missionaries, but with a far smaller prob of failure.

Some small towns successfully fight off big corps like Wal-Mart for a while but eventually the corps always win. Just keep throwing execs like you would with missionaries.

You don't know how close to home that hit..I live in a city of 35,000 people and we've been fighting for years to keep Super Wal-Mart out of our community....we just lost that fight, they broke ground on it 3 days ago.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. For the record I was sending execs to my own cities but on another continent from my corp HQs. I was just surprised because I managed to send both corps without fail to every city on my mainland and they only started causing problems when I started trying to give my little overseas cities a bit of a boost. :)
