Ok so ive been playing civ 4 off and on for about 2 years and i Have worked up so i can comfortably play on noble difficulty. and this maybe somewhat noobsih.. but how does one really use corporations? I did dabble with them in one game but all it seemed to do is bankrupt me. The corporation i used was Mine Inc and i different corporations have different effects. are they worth it? can the be a game changer? or are they just kinda worthless?

Corporations are one of the best ways for a late-game economy, besides State Property. What you do is found corporations(usually Mining Inc and Sid's Sushi) in the city with the highest wealth, and make sure you have wall street(and market/grocer/bank) in that city. Build courthouses and the gold multipliers in all of your other cities, too, and you should be able to run a profit unless you're playing full of resources mapscript and you have like 33 Mining Inc. resources, which happened to me and I was running a net loss. On normal mapscripts though, you should be fine.
Huh maybe i just wasn't ready for said corporation or maybe i didn't play with it long enough to see the benefit. Thanks
pay attention to the fact that they (mining/sushi which is the most common combo) creates Food and hammers from commence, which is hard to do otherwise ... lower the cost by building Courthouses in every city with a Coperation and Market/grocer/bank/WallStreet in the city with HQ (keep HQ's together and if possible together with a shrine as well for added profit)

In short, a corporation in a city provides extra food/hammers/culture etc. (depending on the corporation) but will cost some gold. So make sure your economy can support the corporations you build. Sushi's Sid is population monster. I guess Cereaal mills is too much to use without Enviromentalism.
Also - if you are late warmonger-razer-rexer (as me) Sushi is way to increase you border pop twice in 10 turns (on Marathon)

Cereal mills usually has less resources in game, and does not provide culture, thus making it only superior in terms of maintenance.
An exception is of course Pangaea maps.

It took me a long time grasp this as well. Basically, the corporation subtracts from your total gross revenue in the "franchise" cities, but adds to it in the headquarters city. Each corporation also provides some unique benefits. Mining gives your a hammer bonus, Aluminum gives you a beaker bonus, Sushi gives you extra food, etc.
Usually corporation wins gold:
HQ with the multipliers=4x3=12 gold/turn;
Other cities with courthouse halve the cost;
So, it's a profit unless more than 24 raw maintenance/turn. If so, the gain in (hammers, food,
whatever) would be enormous. And can always be "translated" in gold.
