It's probably a subject discussed before, but since I am only recently a registered user.... I've read the guide/faq or whatever on certain improvements effect on corruption, my questions is:

Is building the courthouse and police station really worth it for cities that are close to the palace or Forbidden Palace? I know it helps with cities far away, but is it possible to get it down to nothing?

You'll probably *never* get it down to nothing. But the corruption-reducing buildings can make a big difference in any city that is not *totally* corrupt. Building them in a city that is near your Palace can make it go from "so-so" to "Powerhouse"!

HI !

And even when the corr.-decr. buildings doesnt have a (visible) effect on the city where they´re build, they at least give you a better OCN than without.

Have Fun !!!

my beliefs on this subject are simple...If ur rich and can afford the imp. cost on courthouse and police station, then knock urself out. I fu cant afford it, ur money is better spent elsewhere.

IMHO if your poor, you need the improvements even more to get more commerce (and more shields), because wltkd only fights shield loss, not commerce loss.

Courthouses are definitily necessary, even if you're poor... The maintenance cost is easily balanced by the improved cash generated each turn.
Now Police station can be usefull if you want to stay in a democracy and wage wars...

Is there a good rule of thumb that dictates when to build these improvements? Meaning, say, if you are losing x commerce/shields then build it?

Usually I build a courthouse if the city is producing >~6-8 commerce(or shields) and all but two are lost to corruption. So if I net at least 2, courthouse time. Subject to consideration, naturally.

My choice, based totally on experience, is to build a courthouse when I have 4 gold or more wasted in a city.

Remember also that civil engineer are really great to help cities far away ; it gives two uncorruptible shields !

I definitely build courthouses, when I loose more than about 40%, and may build them (unless I have other more important needs), when I loose more than 20%.

And it all depends on circumstances. If you produce 44 shields and want to build 90 shield infantry, a police station is worth building, even if you have only 10% waste.

It would seem that building a Courthouse in a city losing 4+ gold/turn to corruption makes sense. Courthouses decrease corruption losses by 50% saving 2 gold per turn. The upkeep on the building it self is 1 gold per turn. Makes sense to me. :-)

Are you sure about this? I checked out this exact thing recently to find out if a courthouse was worth building. Before I built a courthouse in a city this town in question was losing 4 gold per turn to corruption. After I built the courthouse it went down to 3.

This is another of those things where one size does not fit all... For my part, I never build a courthouse in my capital, or in the innermost ring of cities around it. There is so little corruption there that it doesn't justify the expense. Likewise I don't have one in my forbidden palace city. Finally, I don't bother in the cities that are very far from either capital or forbidden palace, where rank corruption will kill any improvement.

My rule of thumb is to build a courthouse in any city (other than the ones mentioned above) that can produce two or more uncorrupt shields before I build the courthouse. At that point, I know the city can benefit. If the city only produces one shield, then it is likely that the courthouse will not help the situation. Simlilarly for police stations.

Do Courthouses and Police Stations reduce corruption and waste or just corruption? The civilopedia says it reduces corruption , but people are talking about reducing waste as well.

I can't guarantee it, but I'm almost positive that courthouses DO reduce waste as well. I'm at work and can't check definitively, but I love building courthouses (everywhere IbnSina mentioned), with waste reduction being the main purpose. I care way more about my sweet shields anyway. Like Masquerogue said, I use civil engineers (if available) all the time in freshly-conquered cities - you can kick out a courthouse fairly quickly, and then the corruption isn't much of a concern anymore and the city workers can 'build' for themselves.

I wondeder if that reduces waste as well. Waste is more of a concern for me actually.

Building the courthouse and police station is not worth.Because it is many other work to do. Your money is better spent elsewhere.I build courthouse and police station too, when it is nothing to do......when AI is not strong enough to chanllage......

I'm inclined to say in DG+ every city with less then 90% corruption will get a Court, and the bigger ones a Police Station as well. And this includes the FP city.
Below Monarch, I agree they are usually not worth the shields, unless you want a specific city to make some more shields (for the even number, or because it's in an important location).
