COTM 14 Pre-game Discussion

OK, I have looked at the start.

Hmm, grassland cow on river, lux immediately available. Whats the catch? :D

Cor! Republic slingshot is sewn on with all that commerce!!

Yep. Reason I'm confident of the trick is having just done the same (same level, same world size) as the Dutch.

Now having seen the start, I reckon that's a very, very, nice 20K spot.

Finally...
why is everyone so happy about 80%? i'm just curious. being a player who always use pangea map in non-gotm games, i tend to play land-based games. i guess i just need a few good players to show me the interesting part of playing a 80% water game. :crazyeye:

i have another question since i normally don't play Archipelago maps.
what's the chance of our starting continent having another civilization (or more than one)?

Reasonably good. My test starts had one neighbour, and there were islands with 3 civs on them.

@Ionimplant:
1. Based on my experience, I think that chances that we start on archipelago alone are about 50%. However, since it is also 80% water, I believe it is very unlikely that we have a neighbor.
2. 80% water happiness: In my case it is just a time issue. I had an extraordinary amount of free time in June (still have it) and I wasted almost all of it to two diety games where one was with 60% of water. I won't have this luxury of free time in July and thus I am glad that I have a good chance to play COTM14, I hope it will be within 20-30 hours which I can save for civ during the next month.

It's a question of time. 70% is fine to me as well - but for a standard 60% game, I'll need at least 50h or have to play sloppy. I skipped the last 3 or 4 CotMs since I simply had no fun to play on with dozens of cities and the game in the bag.
The worst possible setting for me is 60% water continents. Huge AIs on the other landmass. No threat, but insanely tedious to fight. 60% is for the milkers; no problem with that in general, but the last CotMs were a bit onesided here.

What is really different on 80% arch/cont maps, though, is that contacts are really important. And that fits my style well.

Starting moves:

Settle at the spot. I think it is a very good starting point.

Worker moves:
First to bg. Mines it, then roads. Then to the moo, irrigates it and roads.

Production:
Granary, then worker.
After that either another worker or warrior. I do not think that with such a start we should worry about exploring our coast line. I will concentrate on London during the first 20 turns. We will have enough time to make sure that we control the oceans.

Research
Research writing on maximum towards Republic slingshot. With such a start, Alphabet in the pocket and archipelago map (no intensive trading among AI), Republic slingshot should be very easy goal.
I do not think that Map Making slingshot is a good idea, I think we have more chances to get The Lighthouse to ourselves otherwise for the reason below.

Foresting
There is one thought: when we will get out of the despotism, furs in forest will be giving us 3 shields per tile. This is extraordinary production.
With mined bg and plains and irrigated moo at the pop 8 we should be able to make 20 spt which gives us The Lighthouse within 15 turns.

I want to traverse the seas so I need Lighthouse. I want to save my GA for later so I can't build Lighthouse. I want to traverse the seas so I need Lighthouse.
