COTM 18 Pre-game discussion

I may be going the Markus5 path on this one.

CivIV is quite tempting and will be here a couple of days before this one starts, so I may decide to slip in a couple of CivIV adventures and maybe an HOF attempt while awaiting GOTM 49. Of the 47 COTM/GOTM games I've completed, my only 2 losses were on diety level games with panagea starts.

The winning strategy for Ottomans/Pangea/Deity.

Ancient Age: Settlers, Workers, Warriors. Save up money while making contacts, research Literature and Currency when possible.

Middle Ages: Libraries, Marketplaces, Barracks, Horsemen. Change to Republic, sell the free tech for everyone's money. Full research to Military Tradition. Take over the world.

Painfully easy, isn't it.

Some people are thinking as to move the settler before settling. I don't think it is a cleaver tactic. The downsides are plenty:
it will cost you a move
using the hill when moved will cost you 1 food, so setting up a 4-turner will get very difficult
not using the hill will rob you of the riversided gold, which will have a considerable impact on money build up or research speed.

The advantages will only come after mining the hill and being in republic. As getting the slingshot in deity is very questionable it might take up a 100 turns before one gets that far.

Amazon has my CivIV ship date as Oct 29. Estimated arrival is Nov 9. Nine days to play COTM 18. I might play just a bit... I'd go with a rapid move to a settler factory ala Twonky and no exploring warriors. Then, try to build a bunch of cities on the desert edge. Do like DaveMcW sez: settlers, workers, warriors, contacts, save money. Research pottery then towards literature and currency. See how far I get... Drop it when CivIV gets to my door.

Would monarchy or feudalism be worth considing?

Never played diety. Stay alive till Sipahi come, and then trounce rivals. Get the great library. Thanks to Karasu for the 2 lux (incense up north) then we won't need as many entertainers, we can get up to size 7 without them i think. 2 happy from lux, 3 content from 2 units and a temple, and then 2 sad. I'm going to settle in place, that way, saves precious tech and expansion, plus we can utilize the gold without wasting one food. So i agree with Redbad, we should settle in place. Ottomans are Scientific and Industrious. Scientific means the extra techs and cheap libraries. Industrious means fast workers. I'm gonna die.

Conquest and predator stuff?

I think Conquest should be start with Alpha, warrior, settler, and 100g.
Maybe those are a little too good.

I can't think of predator things, what would it be, forget masonry?

@Twonky -- why move SE? All I can think of is that that is only way to get a shield out of a flood plain. Doesn't seem like it's worth it, but you're a better player than me, so I'm probably missing something...

Can I play this in Conquest Class (as opposed to Open)? I have never won a G/C-OTM at the Diety level.

He has a point. Also the worker has to travel less, and the early gold is nice.

Rep slingshot is one word, plain and simple:

IMPOSSIBLE! No alpha starting, quicker pangaea tech pace, I'm research pottery at max, then shutting off research, and keeping up via trade/buy.

I believe I will settle in place. Given the fact it is diety and pangea, and we appear to have room to expand in every direction, I think a key to this game will be quick and strategic expansion. That begins with getting out settlers ASAP. I also see little advantage to moving in the short term, and I think the first couple thousand years will be critical. I am thinking of building warrior, granary, settler, warrior, worker, then all out settler production. I plan to mine and road both wines first, then move on to irrigating the wheat. I think with the wine, the single warrior for MP, and the quick initial settler should prevent the need for a second MP warrior. I also will go for a quick pottery research and hope for the AI to initiate some contacts. My second city will pop out several warriors, first for exploration and then for MP. After pottery 100% taxes and go for a domination victory via Cavalry.

I planned to try 20k in cotm18. But on Deity?? Can this be feasable? Some time ago I have tried 100k on Deity with no success. The AI tech research speed and wonder building is so high... What the otehrs think about this possibility?

i actually am thinking about 20k. chances are if you get it, you will also get the award.
i plan to build a temple in the 2nd city and then start prebuild for great library since it will be quite useful anyway. we probably own't get more than two AA wonders and chances of getting early MA wonders are also slim (unless we get a lot of great leaders). but at the end of MA or beginning of IA, we should have a good control of the game and can slow down all the AIs. a post 2000AD winning isn't impossible. and if you have good learder luck...

ionimplant: This is C3C and SGL's are turned off so Great Leaders won't be hurrying any major wonders.

I think my primary reason for not playing is having no idea of how to win. The AI advantages make any type of longterm warfare impractical, it's very difficult to out research or out culture the Diety AI and if I do manage to stay close and get the UN via a nicely timed pre-build, they never seem to vote for me. The 'Ottomans' are one of the few that I'd try it with as the strong UU, the SCI & IND combination allow for fewer workers and a free tech each age.

On deity, a cultural victory is basically a conquest victory that leaves 1 civ alive.

In your strategy synopsis, what would you do with all the warriors as you shift to building horses? Would you shift to horses as soon as possible or after republic?

Markus5: Not sure if this will answer your question but the warriors would already have been upgraded and horses being built for the second wave (once knights are reached). Although with enough production, luck and skill you could augment an early attack force with horses.

Assuming you are nearing MA have already upgraded to swords then you will be building horses. Although in diety this is not walk in the park.


As for the gold, this is one of my favorite resources to settle on, next to some of the high gold luxuries. The early gold is a big plus, but, I wouldn't dial too close to just fast tech pace as your pace will still be pretty slow compared to the AI. But the gold will certainly help you stay alive to MA if otherwise you wouldn't.

How many people arn't going for a congquest/domination type win?
Having only won 2 on Deity this should be quite a challenge.

Headblend, are you going to try and win this one?

Also, how much of a roll do you think disease will play in the early game? I think it could be a game breaker if you have bad luck.

(Do you get disease from being around the floodplains without actually working them?)


p.s If the GOTM-AI wins this one and I don't i'll be seriously annoyed
