You may only read this thread if:
  1. You have completed and submitted your game.

Posting Restrictions:
  1. None! As long as its related to the GOTM, and within the forum rules!
  2. And ... Absolutely NO discussion of any other active 'X'OTM contest!

Due to the difficulty, we'll have one more thread to cover the from the Middle Ages through the end of the game; and since this is the FINAL spoiler, you can pretty much say anything about your entire game. Lots of 20K games going on; Ansar Warriors - did they play a part?

Open, 20K, five-city challenge (Mecca, Cow City, Dye City, Wheat City, Fur City).

Scout climbed the mountain. I decided to settle in place, though the gold was tempting. Worker to tobacco and then to BG; spotted Wines along the way. Initial build was Temple - Warrior - Settler.

Many wars with the Mongols. I don't think I used the UU because I didn't have horses. I believe I went from longbowman to infantry.

Unlike TxCraig I played a regular 20K game with a big empire (eventually) and lots of science farms. A funny detail at the end of the game was that I was able to research Ironclads in 4 turns with 0% research. Of course, a game like that gets less and less fun, especially if one is not doing exceptionally well. Manhattan Project, Integrated Defence and Pentagon were all meaningless for the result.

I got Shakespeare's Theatre in 870 AD, not much earlier than TxCraig even though he had only 5 cities. I got SETI in 1465, pulling away from TXCraig later thanks to my huge empire.

My jason score was in the 7Ks.

The Ancient Era
Settle in place, and push out a settler to grab the moo spot in the southeast. Research a normal C3C path to hit the Republic slingshot in 1000bc. Barbs are no great problem, huts give me loads of axes and workers, plus one tech, and I meet the other AI on Alpha fairly quickly. I am able to trade sufficient techs from them to keep my wonder-building programme running, but towards the end of the era the Mongols start getting belligerent, and hit me with an army sufficient to seriously threaten Mecca, and keep the entire rest of my empire busy desperatley pumping out archers. I hit the medieval in 390bc when Cleo researches Construction, and I buy it with Republic.

The Artistry Bee-line
Gifting up Osman gets him Feudalism, which eventually becomes the only tech that I learn from the Great Library; when I finally get a galley across the eastern ocean in 190ad (after about 10 fails), I find the French have that tech too. I meet the remaining civs over the next 150 years. Meanwhile, I research up the top branch of the tech tree, as the only sensible medieval tech path in 20k is to head straight for Shakespeare, with a possible detour for Astronomy if the shields are stacking up fast enough that Copernicus won't delay Shakespeare (but might make some time back by speeding up research through Democracy). In this case, Copernicus is well worth stopping off for, as lacking any coastal wonders, I need it to start my golden age. I reach Astronomy in 370ad, get Copernicus in 440ad, and follow it with Shakespeare in 550ad.

The Expansion Begins
While Mecca has been dedicating itself to wonder-hogging, the rest of the empire has concentrated on building up my military - support costs paid by tech sales to the AI, who have been able to come up with fairly convincing gpt. The army isn't great, due to the desperate resource situation down at this end of Alpha. Not even any saltpeter on my side of the Egyptian border! So, I have a couple of spears covering plenty of catapults and longbows. It isn't very glamorous, but it should suffice. I dow Egypt in 610ad, and begin a plodding war, fighting over some of the most dreary desert imaginable. There is one big upside though; I get three leaders very quickly, after just 3 elite wins, and then another 5, and another 1. The first forms an army of course (longbows, and one musket upgraded from a spear after I take the Egyptian saltpeter), and the second rushes Epic.

The Industrial Era
As my 1-move units slog inexorably through the Egyptian deserts, my GA-fuelled research makes short work of the bottom branch of the medieval tech tree; nothing after Democracy takes more than four turns, so I hit Gravity in 750ad, and enter the industrial era. There are a lot of medieval wonders outstanding at this point, and big AI builds still in progress, so I am reluctant to bring Osman into the new era. Even if I did, as the only Sci civ, he probably wouldn't be keen on selling me his free tech, and there's only one tech of interest he could get anyway, Steam. Why do I normally agonise over this?!? So I set research to Steam and leave the AI languishing half way through the medieval. I'll bring Osman up when it safe, and hope he gets Nationalism or Sanitation.

Finally Gaining Strategic Resources
With the completion of Steam in 820ad, I find with relief that I have coal; start on rails. But after rushing to Industry for a factory in Mecca, I realise that I have forgotten I still don't even have iron! Luckily, the Egyptian campaign finally progresses beyond Thebes in 870ad, and I can colony the nearby iron. Mecca's factory is rushed 910ad, and followed by a coal plant. By 1070ad, I have reached the end of the easily accesible Egyptian cities, although there are still some beyond Ottoman lands. But I'm not about to bother with ROPs just to reach those. I give Cleo peace and dow Osman instead (after bringing him forward - he got Steam, meh). A couple of Ottoman towns later, and I can finally claim his horse source for my own. I had previously traded for Ottoman horses, so had some ansars, and with Joan's research of Mil Trad in 1120ad, I get to upgrade to cavs. War should go smoothly from here on then.

War Going Smoothly
In 1260ad, I reach the penultimate Ottoman town - I need to keep Osman alive for his modern free tech, of course. He gets peace, and Cleo gets dowed again. Osman has reduced her to living on a galley moored off the north coast of Alpha. A tough galley though, it sinks a couple of my frigates / privateers before I finally send it to the bottom of the sea. I dow the Mongols as well: also victims of Ottoman aggression, they have only a single town, which I immediately claim. Alpha is virtually under my control, so I start massing the troops to head east from the northern end of Alpha, to hit the Japanese, but am distracted by a not-very-sneaky sneak attack by the Spanish. I quickly take the equatorial island from them, then jump from there into their territory on Beta. Spain is small and weak, so by 1380ad I am done, leaving them in a single town on the island next to Alpha's northwest peninsula, pumping war happiness into my empire. :)

Mopping Up
I dow Toku as soon as I have finished the Spanish campaign, and move smoothly around the Japanese peninsula, wiping them out in 1465ad. By this time, Joan has unwisely sneak attacked me too. Aggressive lot, these AIs... Access to France is rather blocked by China, but I ship some units over from my core, and raze their northwestern cities. Joan buys Mao onto her side, and then secures 20 turns of peace for herself by researching Espionage. No such luck for the Chinese; caught in a pincer between my forces from the French and Japanese campaigns, Mao is eliminated in 1545ad. When the French 20-turn peace expires in 1605ad, it takes only two turns to complete that job, despite Joan's attempt to settle the huge tracts of empty land on Beta. Just Bella and I survive to witness Mecca hitting 20,000 culture in 1665ad.

I avoided the 20K competition and went diplomatic instead, winning the vote in 1400. I wiped out the Egyptians in time to get their iron for factories and took over most of the Mongol lands by the end, as they kept declaring on me. I got 3 GL, using them for 2 armies and Wall Street. The armies had terrible luck, and neither one survived all that long. My 12 hp infantry army died taking one hp off of a regular musket, sitting on grass in a town with no walls.

At the end, I gave France a couple of towns, to make sure Joan would be my opponent. (France and China had been alternating in the population top rival spot, though France had always had more land.) I declared and bought everyone else into an alliance. The Mongols abstained, as expected.

Amusingly, most of my friends were willing to declare on France for the cost of a right of passage with me. I gave some gifts to Japan to make them happy with me; when I gave them literature at the end, they still hadn't researched a single middle aged tech.

My game went very similar to PaperBeetle's. First The Republic, then Astronomy
for the Golden Age and Free Artistry for Shakespeare's Theater. Also the attack
from the Mongols. It was a bit tight for a bit. I tried to alleviate the situation with
alliances with Ottomans and/or Egypt.

I didn't trudge through Egypt with slow units though, but bought Horses from
China. I then realized, in 750 AD as I discovered Steam Power and connected
Coal, that I needed Iron not only for Ansar Warriors and made a plan to seize
it from Japan in the north, where a city could be founded close to Kyoto and to
Iron. This plan was pulled through in 860 AD, which was vital for Railroads, but
a few turns later, China declared war and I lost the Horses. I had to fight my
way east on the Japanese peninsula to the horses against the collected troops
of all tribes on Beta, which I had engaged for War Happiness. So I couldn't make
headway on Alpha until much later.

I spent too much money on upgrading units and failed to rush anything at all in
Mecca. The second Great Military Leader appeared shortly after Heroic Epic was
built. So all Military Great Leaders formed Armies, except in the end when they
rushed Marketplaces on Beta.

I could trade for all first-tier Middle-Age Technologies, starting luckily with
Monotheism against Ancient-Age optionals. In the beginning of the Modern Ages,
I researched Economy and traded it for Steam Power. Similary in the Modern
Ages, I had to research Computers and trade for, I think, Fission.

The other tribes on Alpha were eventually exterminated. China and Spain shared a
small, cold island in the far south with a capital each on it. Japan remained with
three cities on two larger islands between the continents. France was largely
untouched and towards the end settled some of the land I gave up in the process
of milking.

The dates below are from my log, not from CivAssist II, to which I have no
access at the moment. I have edited the dates back one turn by hand. I might
have forgotten some build, certainly in the end when I played over 40 turns fast
through the night yesterday. That hurt my micro-manager soul.

Yeah, I was hoping you weren't going to make it the finish line in time ;) as from the AA spoiler I knew you were teching much faster than me. And this is really the key metric for determining the result of a 20k game:

...especially in C3C, where Shakespeare acts as a hospital.

Several reasons I suppose:
- I was late to Literature, having already reached the slingshot unusually late.
- I had the opportunity to grab more early wonders than usual; to get both Pyramids and Oracle is uncommon, at least in my history of 20k runs.
- Monarchy came up a bit early, researched by Cleo. Gardens is a superior 20k wonder, and I didn't want to let the AI get it.

So it was my fifth wonder, compared to your third, but I think that's okay; if I had gone for it sooner, I would have had to pass on at least one of those 4cpt wonders. As I recall, the way the old masters like DaveMcW and SirPleb used to play it, they would simply build each wonder in strict order of cpt-per-shield, but then they had AI mind control powers to stop the other civs stealing opportunities from them. Didn't they?

Outstading, P & PB. Needless to say, you both beat me by miles. I didn't play very focused. A ridiculous detail was the fact that I didn't choose the capital and the starting location for my 20K town. Instead, I chose a spot that made 96 shields with factory and plant, while the starting location surely made more than 100. Grrreat.

Still, it's encouraging to see TWO masterly 20K games played out in this ancient game.

As I recall, it was 108spt with the option to run food deficit for 114spt. Which is actually even stronger than it looked in 4000bc... some of the chops revealed bgs, I suppose.
