COTM99 - Sumeria - Final Spoiler

Welcome to the final spoiler for COTM99.

You may read this spoiler and post your own experiences and comments once you have submitted your game or abandoned it.

It was a tough game this time round - how did you deal with the jungle?

Domination win in 1545ad

This is a late date for a domination win at this level, mostly due to circumstances I noted in the first spoiler.

After finishing off the Iroquois, I turned to the Greeks and used knights to get them down to just three cities that were in the center of the map. The Maya DOW'd me for no apparent reason, but it was a fake war on my part. I allied with the Japanese and Greeks just to keep the Maya busy. I took this break to rush to MT and use Cavalry to finish the game off.
Just as I was finishing off Greece, the Chinese decided to try their luck. I again allied with everyone to keep them off my back while I turned my attention to the Hittites. The Japanese were wiped out by the Chinese and the Maya lost a couple of cities.

Once the Hittites were done it was time for the Chinese. It only took just a few turns to go over the limit. I did succumb to a ROP agreement/violation to pre-position my Troops against the Chinese. The only time I did so in the game.

The map type/shape and the endless jungle certainly made this a struggle. The Hittites appeared to have the best land for the early game.

At this level, even a poor start or bad early choices can be overcome given time. Perhaps a retry might be in order just to see what effect my poor first 30 turns had on the outcome.

I just barely finished this one in time, and haven't submitted yet. I stuck with my plan to go for 100K, although the amount of micromanaging to keep under the domination limit, but rush as much culture as possible almost made me start one more war just to get this over with. Wound up with a culture victory in 1840.

Ok, I missed the dead-line (or the dead-line missed me) by a few hours, but mad-bax said he wasn't sure, whether he might have closed the submission system a bit too early (Australia is west of the date-line, isn't it? I think a while back civ_steve explained to us somewhere, that the dead-line is supposed to be 23:59:59 on the date-line that runs somewhere through the Pacific...), so I'm attaching it here.
It's nothing special and won't compete for a medal anyway, but not having the effort go completely waste is always nice...

So the plan with Cavalry and saltpeter-disconnect/connect worked ok, but it probably wasn't the best plan... :D Reached domination about 300 years later than supersova. Once I had the Cavs, the mop up of AIs was quick and easy, but I guess I lost too much time getting to Military Tradition.
And I had a bit bad luck that Artemis was built far away in Entremont. I captured it quite late, and 5 turns after capturing it, I went over the dom limit by 127 tiles. Had it been a bit closer, I could probably have saved 5 turns or so.

Domination for Sumer in 810 AD.

@Lanzelot: The submission page is very clear on the deadline calculation, and gives the time remaining for each game in progress. There's really no excuse for submitting late. mad-bax has no control over the close time. He sets the close DATE, and it's then down to the server doing time calculations.

However, mad-bax has pleaded on your behalf, and I have added your result to the list. This does NOT represent a precedent for others to push their luck. Deadlines are deadlines, and your fellow players would be right to be upset if a late entry deprived them of an award.
