question from a new player... i have read the manual and cant decide if the cottage improvement has to be within city radius to generate commerce..
please help... thx
Yes, cottages must be within your cities' big fat cross and cultural
borders to generate commerce. In addition to that you must work
the cottages for them to grow.
Cottages (and any other improvement) must be in one of the x's in order for it to count toward your city's commerce/production/food. You can still improve special resources to claim them for your empire, but the tile will not contribute commerce/production/food.
@wamozart: the next thing to understand is that a tile only yields anything when a population point works it. If you double click on the city, you'll see that you have one white circle or one specialist per population point. You can change them around by clicking if you don't like what the computer chose for you. Play with tile yields on (Ctrl-Y).
