While I've had no issue with playing vanilla Civ V on my macbook, recently when I've tried to run the game on my PC the game will load up, show the developer/publisher logos and all that, play the intro movie, and then show the title/initial loading screen (not the main menu). It's at this point where the game crashes to desktop, and steam reacts as if I've quit the game myself, often showing that little window advertising new releases etc.
