crash to desktop. pls help!

after about 30 turns the game crashes to desktop. i tried just about everything suggested on civfanatics. installing civ iv patch 1.61. adapting the civ4 ini file as described, updating to latest cataclyst drivers, then back to cataclyst 4.12. enabling/disabling anti aliasing as well as agp. disabling/enabling movies. updating bios....etc etc.
nothing works. keeps on crashing to desktop at end of same turn each time.
i noticed however a message saying "movies are not installed correctly" but i did follow the instructions during installation of the game, in fact i uninstalled and re-installed it several times. not in the default c:\program files etc map,
but in d:\civilization IV map.
i'm out of options right now.
anyone familiar with the problem and that has a solution?

If you suspect movies are the culprit, you can disable movies in game options. If that won't help, please post your specs: CPU, RAM, graphics card. Consider posting here a savegame just before the crash. I wonder if it'll crash for us as well.
