Been seeing this more and more since I started playing again. I get many hours and hundreds of turns into a game, and I get to a point where the game just closes down and I can't possibly progress any further.

In the current lost game, I was rolling into the turn where I learn either Realism, or Scientific Method. It pops up into the new tech window, but before it can finish loaded, the game drops.

I loaded the save a dozen times, and it made it past the tech load once or twice, but on the next turn's tech it drops anyway.

When it first started, I was playing on Medium graphics, textures, animated improvements, etc. Game could be slow at times, but seemed fine. After it started crashing, I turned that all to low or off. Still crashed even though the game was more responsive.

I am playing on a giant map, tons and tons of resources. 6 AI in 3 alliances, each with their own continents.

I have approximately 25-40 cities, but not very many units(maybe 30 total).

What are the probable causes for the constant crashing? Giant map? Just too much stuff going on so it dies?

I would like to start over on a large map or something, but I really don't want to go through it all again if it will just die on me again anyway.

Playing on Vista, 4gig ram, NVidia 9k series mobile graphics, centrino 2 processor.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. :)

When you pass the turns do you have the score and nation display ( you know the one where you contact other nations) open? I hear if you have that closed you can pass more turns without a crash. It helped me kinda

hmm well i don't know, maybe someone else has more to say.

Is the save more than 2 Gb? You may have an indissoluble problem if you do.

Isn't there the 3 GB switch issue for Vista as well?

And I would bet that both players with this problem allow Windows to "handle" their Ram usage.

EXample:My Computer/properties/Advanced tab/performance settings/visual effects/Let windows choose what's best for my computer - button selected. Not a good idea or choice.

Never let windows handle your ram. Instead choose one of these 2 choices: Custom or Adjust for Best performance.

Then select the Advanced tab on this popup screen and under the top 2 sections (Processor handling and Memory Usage) choose Programs. Last section is Virtual memory. Set paging file size to At Least 2046MB.

Wether you use a 32bit or a 64bit OS this Is Important! Even if you only have 2GB of ram and moreso if you have more than 2GB.

Try it.

JosEPh :)

Edit: Also "Save Game" at least every 20 turns on larger maps. Don't go for hours and hundreds of turns without saving. You are only asking for trouble by doing this.

Vista 64 bit
4g ram
P8400 Intel Core 2 Duo
Page file size is 6gb

All my saves, even on the giant maps, are under 1mb.

I always save every 1-3 turns on giant maps. This isn't a case of loosing lots of turns from a crash.

This is a case of not being able to progress at all no matter how many times I try. Learn scientific method, crash. Learn realism, crash. Everytime. Similar results in past games, different circumstances, but similar CTD.

I am playing a new game on a standard map, so I will try and push it to the limits and see if I get this problem again.

Maybe changing the performance settings will keep this from reoccurring. :)

I have the same problem (usually with Railroad though). Mind you my system is a lot worse, but then again I play with small maps.

I have the same problem. My system is fine but the ROM from 2.81 to crash to desktop errors. I played Smal map. Everything ok but very boring. Because giant map was very good. So, Hearts of iron 3 is the best I'll return...

Do somebody know about the "fail to uncompress game data" or some kind of that clash when loading a save game?
i just cant load the save game file, could someone help me?
