I have been able to run the game fairly reliably in windowed mode (smaller than my full screen) using DirectX 9 mode. However, I get fairly consistent crashes when the leader screen appears (it goes to full screen mode without any input from me) and if I do not respond to the screen in about 5-10 seconds, it completely crashes the video system, forcing a reboot.
I am running a 20" HP Pavillion HDX9494nr laptop with a dual core processor, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia 8800M GTS graphics (512 MB) and Win Vista Home Premium. I am running all the latest drivers, in particular finding the latest Nvidia beta drivers improving performance. I also downloaded the DirectX 9 runtime version.
I sense that there is something in the coding of the leader screen that crashes the GPU. I forgot to mention that I have voice and music turned off and have the leader screen on minimum (no animations.) It still crashes the computer.
I am able to run huge maps reliably into 200+ turns, as long as I take care of the leader screens promptly. If I wait too long to respond - BANG, out she goes like a lightbulb. Black screen, no response to Ctl-Alt-Del.
