CRC Error upon patching

I get the following error when I apply the 1.61 patch (or any patch for that matter). I recently changed computers and I reinstalled teh game. 1.0 runs perfectly. I download the update in-game and this leads to the installation. When the installation is about 60% done I get the following error:

"CRC error: The file (path to where I installed Civ4).exe doesn't match the file int the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor."

I did a search for CRC and found nothing. I also saw that some people were having the same problem when 1.09 came out so I'm hoping someone can assist me.

Thanks

I got this message which included that the intro.mp3 (not sure if that's its precise name) was messed up. However, the game still seems to work just fine for me... I Escape out of the Intro anyway, seeing as how I've already seen it a billion times.

So I'd try just playing the game and see if it works. Maybe it's something that doesn't matter, either b/c the file(s) in question don't matter much and/or simply the installer is confused and everything's ok.

P.S. You say you did a search for CRC, but didn't find anything. You won't. CRC stands for "cyclical redundancy check". Zip files, patches worth their salt, etc., retain a "checksum" number that is made by adding up all the bytes in the file and then keeping the right-most summed numbers (e.g. in 4,321 it would keep "21"... the actual sum might be very long). The CRC is actually a more sophisticated number but basically it amounts to this. So a CRC error is just a way of saying that a file that is being unpacked does not match its expected checksum and therefore must be screwed up.

Thanks for the info. I did the reinstall/repatching and it worked after the 4th time.

I'm sorry it took four times, dude.

Civ4 still crashes on me a lot (apporx every 2 hours), but I'm playing small and tiny solo maps with autosave=1 so they don't take long to reload. And otherwise it's tons of fun.

You were right it was a corruption of the patch file hence the CRC failure. I realized that the reason why most of my downloads were corrupted was because of ActiveArmor that was installed. It wasn't just a Civ4 thing; small things like trillian, winamp, etc. were also failing to install. I got rid ActiveArmor and now the integrity of my dls are back to normal.
