Okay...cruise missiles seem like a pretty good idea, right? I remember in Civ 2 when they could take out a stack of units easily...over land, over sea it didn't matter...

But now, they really suck...only moveable on land [in Civ 3 Vanilla at least] and only use a bombard attack! WTH!!! A cruise missile should be able to go over water...that's how the Tomohawk (spelling?) cruise missile works, so why not the dinky little Civ 3 one?

um dresdor i think cruise missles already go over water because i used a cruise missle to damage a ship once? or are you talking about you firing a cruise missle at a land unit across a lake, sea, or ocean?

I know they can bombard over water, but they can't just travel over water (or at least I'm unable to get them to).

I found that cruise missiles were not super effective in vanilla. I have never played Civ2, so I can't relate to any past abilities they had. But, C3C, they have improved from vanilla and have a range of 4 squares and can be transported by transports across water. They are effective at finishng off both land and naval units.

I find it highly amusing to fill a transport or two with Cruise Missiles, because I just get the idea of the ramp folding down and a barrage of missiles flying out Robotech-style...

I use cruise missles as a cheap way to destroy roads and rail to strategic resources and luxeries.

Yeah...cheap...when a bomber can do it continually with just a little more time...and doesn't die unless they have fighters.

Of course I'm an advocate of carrier tactics and bombers (as is evidenced by my avatar)

But just from my experience, bombers aren't as acurate. Now I do use bombers all the time, don't get me wrong. But when I have to have a roadway destroyed with little margin of error, I'll use a cruise missle. Yea carrier tactics in use with bombers is very powerful.

Can you do that now? I'm pretty sure that in vanilla civ3 you couldn't load them in transports, which meant that they couldn't be transported off a continent. Very annoying the first time I found that out, I was stuck with lots of missiles and no one to shoot them at!

Logically they should be airliftable, but afaik they're not.

You can't load them in transports, but you can move them on transports.

i noticed that the nuke sub can carry 1 "transport tactical missle".

does that only apply to tac. nukes or ICBM and Cruise as well?

ICBM cannot be moved, but since it can hit any square on the board it doesn't matter (until that city gets captured :) )
Conpletely illogically a cruise cannot be loaded onto a sub or a carrier. In fact AFAIK apart from this transport glitch there's no way to get them across seas.
Stupid if you ask me. It would make so much sense if certain ships could carry them (battleships, destroyers, nuke subs, carriers etc.)

my point exactly.. i wish i can make a ship a missle frigate.... with cruise missles.. but you kinda cant...

Is there a way to mod civ to do this?

Probably...and as I'm innept at programming anything, I wouldn't know how. I'm sure a lot of vanilla players would appreciate something like this, but I probably can't do it.

easye, flag a cruse missle with the "tatical missle" flag, strangely enofe it isnt. allso if u want a destryo to cary them, flag the destroyer with "transport tatical missels only" flag, sometihng similer to that.

the only prob with that is then destroyers chold cary tac. nuckelar missels

In vanilla civ, cruise missiles were almost useless. They're a lot better, and I've begun building them again, they're great for use in the initial attack when the enemy gangs up and tries to retake positions. But I still think they're far from mirrors of the real-world weapons. The range is good enough, but the ability to load several of them onto ships that can launch them is sorely lacking.

When did they get better? Is that in PTW or C3C?

Also, where abouts can I set the tactical missile flag? In Civ2 it was nice and simple, hopefully it's easy in Civ3 too!
