Okay, so I decided to download a mod (the Star Trek mod, v.0.90). All seemed well, unzipped it to the correct location. Now, while loading the actual scenario (after going through Civ Content and setting faction, etc), the game comes across an error and has to close (technically, I call it a CTD, although I have to use the Task Manager to forcibly exit the game at this point). It happens when the colour assignment for the civs is taking place, or at least I figure it happens at that point as that is what the progress bar indicates is being done. Why might a mod crash, in general, at this point? Forget that it's a specific mod, as there seems to be very little (i.e. no) activity in the main thread for the mod. Let's just focus on the colour assignment issue, as it could be a fairly simple issue (one I might come across with other mods? Doesn't hurt to ask, just in case).
Some background - I use Win 7, Civ III Complete. never had problems on Win 7 before, the game works better than on XP (back then, had to disable the virus checker for Civ III Complete, as it fubarred the entire computer whenever I tried loading the game up).
