Figured I would start a new thread just listing my problem in the hopes of some (helpful) replies.

First the two system configs.

1st : P4 3.2gig, GeForce 5950 Ultra 256mb, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, 1gig Ram.

2nd : P4 3.0gig Ge Force 6800 GT 256mb, Sound Blaster Live, 2gig Ram.

Now the problem.

Computer 2 runs the game perfect. Nock on wood I've not had a CTD, Freeze up, or System Reboot on it, and am able to play hours on end on it.

Computer 1 however went through many phases of problems. Freeze ups that required me to manually restart (hitting the button). CTD's which on single player sucks as I have to redo those turns, and on multi player isn't so bad as Comp 1 is still running and lets me join back up. The last is Reboots. I've rolled drivers all around from latest to newest. At some point I was getting the errors about every turn (this is tested on multi player LAN, though I can duplicate it on single by jumping rapidly over the map). Using the latest (beta) sound card driver, clearing my cache before each play session (and every CTD, Reboot), using an older vid driver (71,89) I've reduced the problem to just the Reboot after about oh, 20-60mins or so depending how careful I am sliding around the map. When it restarts the game sorta freezes and then I hear a sound from the speakers similar to the sound a CD makes when it skips in a player. Then the screen goes black and restarts. Was hoping the patch would fix, but didn't help.

I've looked through the forums and tried many (if not all) of the suggestions. I use the .bat file to start Civ4 with High priority. I close down all programs and clear the cache folder. I've adjusted the virtual memory as suggested. The best I've got it down to is what is listed in the above paragraph. I know there are plenty of posts on this forum about what a bad game it is, how it sucks, etc. Plenty of replies like 'get a better computer, check your drivers etc'. I'm just looking for some advice and suggestions. I am running out of ideas as to me the systems seem identical. In all other games (even the buggy as hell SWG) comp 1 outperforms comp 2. I do have an extra 1gig of ram and will prob put it into comp1 as that's the only thing I can think of that's different.

Any advice would be most appreciated. If this thread gets nocked down to fast I'll bump to make sure plenty get a chance to read and (hopefully) offer some advice. I would try take2's CS, but they only told me the stuff I've already tried. Gamers help other gamers more often than the gaming industry helps them. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Not an answer to your questions, but another question:

Are both computers running the same OS? What motherboards do they have? It's interesting to find out where this difference can come from...

Is there also a clear difference in performance while playing Civ? Playing movies, navigating/zooming the map and so on..

I posted to your other thread too (would be better to make only one). I have the same problems happening with almost identical hardware. Have tried multiple things to fix, including 1.09. No joy.

p4 3.2ghz, i875p motherboard, GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, SB Audigy2 ZS, 1gig ram
