I'm relatively new to this mod and really like it, but something that really annoys me is the fact that whenever I play on a larger mapsize then Small, I get ctds. These usually start around turn 200, and there's about 30 turns between the first few of them, but then they go more frequent, to the point were it practically crashes every 2nd turn. These crashes appear when I contact another leader/ am contacted or when I go to an advisor screen or the civilopedia. BTS is updated to 3.19, and FFH to 0.41b, witht he artpack.
In vanilla BTS, I usually play on Huge Terra maps with 18 civs, so it's really annoying that I have to scale down all the way to Small to make FFH playable.

FfH2 uses more resources than vanilla civ. You should be able to improve your performance by lowering your graphics settings, although of course your graphics will suffer. Be sure to keep the "Animations Frozen" and "Effects Disabled" options off, however, since turning those options on will cause problems displaying FfH2 unit graphics.

If you haven't recently defragmented the drive on which FfH2 is installed you may be able to improve performance by doing so. If nothing else that should improve load times.

Increasing the amount of memory your computer has would also help, although of course that requires a cash investment.

^Do you mean RAM or Hard disk memory? I have 4 GB RAM, so I don't think that's the problem. I think it may have to do with my rather crappy video card. I also have 150 GB of free room.

RAM. 4 GB is more than plenty for FfH2. If your graphics card isn't very good then I'd suggest turning down the graphics settings in the game, which should help. You might also consider upgrading your video card, finances permitting.

I have this same issue, and I think it's a tad ridiculous. I've got 4 gb ram and a 9800 GTX+. I can play fallout 3 and left 4 dead on maxed settings... it's absurd that I can't play a civ mod on high settings. Theres got to be some really inefficient memory management going on in this mod.

oh well.

I play with maxed settings with 1 GB of RAM and a 6800. On a standard-sized map it runs fairly smoothly until the very late stages of the game; on larger maps it slows down much earlier. It doesn't become unstable and start crashing unless I've been playing for more than 10 hours straight, or if I leave it running but idle for several hours and then return to play (in this situation I usually save, exit and relaunch the game, and then reload to avert the problem).

If you are experiencing frequent crashes with that much more RAM and a better video card then I would first recommend that you run Disk Cleanup on the drive that contains your Paging File, and then defrag that drive. Then defrag the drive on which Windows is installed (if it is on a different drive), then defrag the drive on which the game is installed (if it is on a different drive). Make sure you shut down any other programs that are running before starting FfH2, especially anything that is processor-intensive. If those steps don't help at all then I would suggest you download a trial offer anti-virus package (from a reputable AV company), install and update it, and then scan your system. If your system is choked with malware your performance can be severly degraded and system stability can suffer.

Thank for the tips, guys. I just completed a game on a Standard sized map (As Hyborem, and there were lots of Burning Sands), without any ctds. I think I'm gonna try if I can do Large.
