CTDs, game freezes/long pauses, unit responsiveness, and how I solved these problems

i'm getting CTD, freezes and lockups on my civ4 v1.61 which is getting quite frustrating. I just want to play games, not debug problems all night.

Anyway, its been happening on the huge "earth" map which ive been playing. I get into the later stages of teh game and it occasionally will just lock up, or crash and reboot my computer.
Then later on i will try to load a savegame and it will load, the in game graphics will load up, but it will just freeze there. I can move the mouse around, but the game is frozen.

I tried messing with the ini file, but to no avail.
Im stumped, and a little peeved.

My computer is:
AMD athlon64 3200+ 2GHZ
1GB ram
windows XP pro
NVidea geforce 6600LE video card 256mb
Realtek AC97 audio

I will try to load the savegame in the morning to see if its the video card overheating, as ive searched and read that some people claim its the videocard overheating and forcing the computer to reboot/crash. I doubt it is, cos i leave the machine for several minutes after a reboot before starting civ4 - usually to go grab a beer and relax before punching the bloody screen in.

Can anyone offer me some advice? Is there are newer patch? My searching has come up with all sorts of loose information that i have not been able to work out so far.

Thanks.
Karl.

well after installing the update, AND doing the directX update.... its still being ghey.

It loaded a slightly older version of my save game (1924AD, opposed to 1930AD)... so i tried to load the 1930 save and it crashed and rebooted my machine.
I tried again, and it crashed to desktop.
Both of these were with the graphics set to medium.

Kind of annoying :(

add to that... when it crashed to desktop the second time, my sound died? Rebooted my machine and the sound came back, but strange that all the sound went away, even from windows!

Hi guyz,

I have implemented all the fixes for the ini file, mentioned in the first page but I still get lots of game freezes. I am trying to play BTS but I am getting tired of this thing. My Graphics Card is 8800GT and I have 2Gig RAM with an WIN-XP OS.

One last thing. I dont have any problems like this even when I play more system consuming games such as Crysis...

Thanks for help.

What would be awesome is if someone made a batch file we could download or something that you just click a button and it lets you choose "Vanilla" or Optimized"

Choosing Vanilla sets everything back to what it is when you first install the game out of the box, and choosing "Optimized" changes everything to the tweaks that are suggested here.

I do not feel comfortable packing and unpacking files and editing ini files.

The file unpacking part is kind of outdated since the game automatically does that after installing some of the later patches, if you're uncomfortable editing INI's you can make a back up of it.

I tried some of these fixes and it didn't fix my mid to late game crashing. (The one where the game crashes and forces your monitor into the lowest resolution and sets it to VGA graphics.)

but like I said, what would be awesome if there was a tool that cleaned everything up for you.

I tend to think loading one mod, then loading another some how causes problems too, so if there was a way to press "Delete Old XML" and it cleans out that file that would be great.

I used to have to monkey with buffers and files settings and config.sys and autoexec.bat but then programmers made us nice tools and obsoleted all this guesswork.

The main problem here is I think I and others like me are unable to play the game in the modern era because of these problems. This is related with the graphics card 8800GT series incompatibility as I've read from the forums. Mahbe a new device patch will solve this someday :S

I have steam and so i have to use the beyond the sword INI, and its quite different then the original. It doesnt have the turn off screenshots option do i just copy paste it or something? or just live with it :'(

Continuous game freezes happen especially in the Modern age with my 8800GT. I tried with a fresh installation and latest patches, even tried the ini fixes adviced in this forum. Nothing changes...

Ironically I can play it in my laptop with an onboard video memory chip without any problems :)
