Not that it matters but almost all your details are off 
It was me, it was on emperor, the second AI conquered was hatty, and the person who didn't think that would be possible was gumbolt, not the OP.
It certainly wouldn't work consistently, but I was making two points. Just because something can work doesn't mean it will work, and in general the earliest successful attack will have the "best" outcome, but have been the most likely to fail. Also, civ IV has a real problem where the AI is rushable early game, and this isn't entirely solved by Monarch+ starting with archers. It's not til deity that the AI is pretty foolproof, and even then there's Q rushing. All I did was build 100% warriors and knock out two civs on emperor, something a trained monkey could do if they got good enough RNG.
Impossible Charlie is a great map, I've got to tackle it again.
