Cultural domination - My first Story

In the south-east I start exploring Japan, and I find unsettled Jungle with bananas, that will be a lot of work, but I need a city in this part of the world.

In 650 AD, I see that my cultural dominance is shrinking a little.
The REX Phase is almost over, and the AI is now building cultural improvements. The bad news is that I will also have to suffer the loss of all my temples when Education will be discovered.
The good news, is that I still have a very much better score than the closest rival.

Nothing much interresting in the next years.

Education finally comes from TGL, and I resume research.
I also rush new temples everywhere. :ack:

I found a city in the jungle as planned (forgot to take a screenshot) The city is called Larsa.
I build most wonders. I get 2 SGL in a row, and build Copernicus in Babylon, and JS Bach in Niniveh ! :goodjob:

The Mongol City of Kazan also Join my empire, but I've lost the screenshots of these events. :D
Later I build Magellan in Uruk, Adam Smith in Babylon (not for culture but for gold), Shakespeare's Theater In Niniveh (Screenshot below).
The French are at war with the Japanese and take 4 cities : Kagoshima, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nara. Now they are clearly the greatest threat, and they also build lot of culture. :undecide:

One thing I've noticed is that you're not cramming nearly enough cities to force flips. Distance to capital and total culture ratio are parts of the flipping equation, but Tiles in Enemy Territory is another HUGE part of it. You can easily place two more cities in the picture below, and I'm not sure if that tile with the ? is a hill or a mountain - if it's a hill, place one there, and you'll have no trouble flipping that city.

The only difficulty with this method of 'forcing' flips is that the AI might want those tiles back, so that's where defenders come in. Your core should be building defensive units, while your outer cities should be going all-out workers & settlers.

As Babylon, when the ToA expires, you shouldn't have too much trouble replacing the temples - they're only 30 shields for you, even cheaper than libraries, but not as much culture-per-shield.

Xerol : You're right, I should have put more cities on the edges of borders, I didn't get much spontaneous flips.
(and yes it is a hill)
But I've played very much faster than I've updated this thread, so now it's a bit too late. (in fact I've played again yesterday evening, and I'm around 1800AD) :p

Yes I rebuild most of the temple pretty quickly, around between 790 AD and 830 AD.
Religious is cool, I really like this trait. Also I switched to democracy very quickly.

And immediatly after the temples I built universities everywhere. The temples will double their output around 1800 AD, and the first universities will double before the end of the game (2050).

I've been building cultural improvement and wonders in all my cities like mad, but i forgot to build settlers in order to fill the gaps in the map. :nono:

Then it comes that I've finished all the middle age techs. I pick steam engine as free tech, but I begin to develop military tradition (the last optional MA tech i didn't worked on). I want to start a war, the world as been far too peacefull lately. ;)
OK now, Steam engine, I will build railroads, I LOVE railroads !
What ? I can't build railroads ??? :aargh:
Bad news : I don't have any coal !
I search on the map, coal, coal, coal, where is coal ??? :scan:

Damned, I really love the Snoopy graphics, but there if there is one drawback, this is it : Coal, is very very hard to spot ! (ok it was already hard with the standard graphics)

At least I find one source, oh, and an other one next to it, both are near the Egyptian city of Giza ! I guess the others are under foreign cities. I'll have to check every city with right click
Ok luck has come back on me, one of the coal sources I spotted is near an unclaimed tile !

I'm too dumb, I didn't build any settler. OK several turns later, I've got a settler, and I send it to the coal spot :

My workers are getting bored, they can't build railroads, so they don't have much to do. They are building roads in the desert and the mountains.
When my settler was halfway to the coal spot (cool spot ?), the Egytpian border extend ! :aargh:
Stupid Egyptian !!! :ar15: :egypt:
And stupid me ! :wallbash:
If only I had built a settler earlier, if only I had build cities in crappy jungle gaps !

OK, fortunatly, there are gaps in the east now, the French have captured Japanese cities, and they didn't build culture yet.
I will send my settlers that way.

I have to pass my nerves on someone now ! :cringe: :aargh: :ar15: :gripe:

I've only 33% of territory, and 40% of population I must get territory faster !

And I need a war anyway, I need MGL to move my palace, and I don't have any elite unit yet !
Also my mighty army of knights hasn't done anything yet, not even won a battle, I can't build the military academy !

OK, let's fight someone, but who ?

Not the Egytpian, I will have to trade with them to get this precious coal, I must stay in good terms. I already have several trades with them.

I have also many trades with the French, I must stop them before making war, with them.

Well, the Germans have already given me some cities,

And the Celts have still not recovered from the pillaging and slave captures from the previous war.

The Japanese are too weak and too far away.

The Mongols are a bit too far also, and I have several trades with them.

But the Mayas, that's a good target. not too strong, but going fast on science and exchanging techs with the others (French, Germans and Egyptians).
They have several cities very close to mine, that don't want to flip. If they have less military units, they will be more likely to flip.

I just have a right of passage with them expiring. I do not reconduct it.

OK, let's ask this smoking jaguar the two cities appart from the others, or his life.
How surprising, he refuses, but he is still polite with me. He says I'm doing an error, and that I cannot manipulate such a powerfull warrior nation as the Maya with empty threats !
hehe, "powerfull warrior nation" the Mayas ?
His best unit is the musketmen, and most of them are regular !

Ok, let's show him what really is a powerfull cultural nation with lots of cannons and cavalry ! ;)

The "Mighty" Mayas, are sending lonely longbowmen, and that's all. Wow, I'm scared !
It seems they don't even have Iron ! Poor guys...
My knights go pillaging. Maybe I should have waited to make this army, I could have put Cavalry in it. They're not better in defence, but they have 1 more movement point, that means 1 more tile pillaged every turn.
Anyway, Maya land is cleared. :hammer:
My reinforcement don't come fast, as I still have no railroads.
I gift the Egyptian one non-optional MA tech. They are gracious :egypt:

The Mayas have thrown many longbowmen, that have mercylessly been slaughtered, but still their city don't flip.
Notice that even Eulbar, my 10th or 12th city, has already more culture than Chichen Itza (The plain tile NE from the moutains occupied by my troops is equidistant for the two cities, so Eulbar gets it) :p
Well I go pillaging in the southern mayaland, as the Quirigua/Yaxchilan area is clean now. :mischief:

And then I do an evil trick ! :satan:

I build a new city, right into mayaland (Yes I can do that ! I'm already at war with them ! :D )

There was 3 unused tiles, a desert, a flood plain, and a WHEAT FLOOD PLAIN !

This is an untolerable waste !!!

So I built a city (Nimrud) ! :p

Edit : Sorry for the white rectangles, I have to do that in order to make the picture not too big (they must weight less than 500Kb).
I will put the full screenshots somewhere else, and put a link to it.

Awesome game MRick, you probably should have made a Cavalry army.

Hopefully you'll get Coal soon.

Keep it up! Babs are awsm. :)

AnsarKing : Yes, if I had known, I wouldn't have done it. But the MGL this army came from was created by a Bowman, in Ancient Age, when I was fighting the Celts. I've waited until I get Chivalry to upgrade Horsemen into that army. I wasn't involved in any war beween the Celts (AA) and the Maya (Industrial Age) !

I'm used to play at Monarch or Emperor, where the AI is more agressive, but at Regent, the AI is not so agressive...

I will trade Steam Engine with the Egyptian, so that they can sell me some coal... But not now, I will wait until the Egyptians have traded the Theory of Gravity with the others, so that they have something to give me.

Still in 1275AD, in the thick jungles near the newly French province of Osaka, the City of Zamua is created. Very soon a Temple and a Library will be build in Zamua.

This is the law in the Babylonian Democratic Empire : A Temple must be built in every city before it reaches 30 000 Citizens, and a Library must be built before 60 000 ! :king:

Also, another Settler is sent to build another city in this Forest near Osaka and Nara.

The Mayas smoke too much Incense, that's not good for their health. So I have to disconnect all those roads between Calakmul and Copan. :jesus:
During this time, Nimrud builds a Temple fast, just before reaching 30 000 Citizens (Size 2).
I'm researching Electricity, to go straight to the ToE, even if I'm already ahead in science. :coffee:
I'm already building the US wonder, I'm still researching in priority the sciences that gives wonders. Especially Culturally strong wonders. But there are not much wonders in Industrial Age...

Wait, ive got a better idea. Research Industrial Age techs till someone decent gets to Scientific MEthod and actually starts a challege on ToE. Then, if you are in the Modern Ages, you can get 2 free Modern Age Techs.

AnsarKing : That's a good Idea. But unfortunatly it is to late to do it for this game. What I'm taling now is what happened when I played last WE. I should have updated as quick as I played, and spend less time playing, more time writing on this forum, so that I could have taken into account nice advice like this.

The Egyptian Happily exchange me Steam Engine, against loads of gold per turn. They must have got all this gold from the French and the German, who curiously don't have gold anymore, but they know theory of gravity.

Now that they know Steam Engine, they know the value of coal, and they agree to give me some PLUS some gold, in exchange for some useless MA Tech : Economics (useless because I've already built Adam Smith's). That's so nice what an AI can do for you when it's gracious ! :egypt: :smoke:

After that, the Egyptian join me in the war against the Maya. They probably have noticed the so called "Mighty" Maya warriors, are not so mighty, and they probably want to capture some cities. Not before I've cleaned every single road and irrigation on Maya Lands although. :D

The Egyptian capture Calakmul, Lagartero, and Bonampak. (Two of which are chown on the previous screen, and Bonampak was the easternmost Mayan city, between Thebes and my land)

They also capture Kamina... the city that was very far in the south-west, and that was chown about 20 screens ago ! ;)

In another part of the world, the French troops are getting bored. :coffee:

So Joan thinks a good war is not a bad idea after all ! And she decides to attack the already weak Celts (who's road system was still not completly rebuild after I've pillaged it, about 1500 years ago !)

Alesia, Camulodunum, and Gergovia are captured. That creates several gaps, that I fill promptly with cities : Hindana, Karana...

There is also a gap between Egyptian cities, near Bonampak, so I founded a city (Tell Wilaya) there also...

About research, after Scientific method, I research Replaceable Parts and Sanitation, and then I stop to synchronize in order to get Atomic theory and Electronic from ToE. So that I will be able to build the Great Dam.

And then...
