Cultural victory?

Well having only recently aquired Civ3 (It was only released here in Sweden on the 16th)
I must say I got rather dissappointed after the outcome of one of my first games..
A cultural victory.

Now, the concept of this makes sense, but it really dumbfounded my when it happened because thee game gave no warning whatsoever.. And I was only one turn from ending a rather prolonged war, (being a democracy my peoples' moods were not so good.) So I got a little pissed, because I like to try to end any wars and boost my peoples' spirits a little to grab extra points at the end.

Now, can anyone tell me what is required for a cultural victory? Is there any way of finding out how many turns there are left to it? The manual is very vague.
(Actually, the manual is very vague in all matters, that's my main critique. It's even worse than the Civ2 manual, which was OK, but not great)

I think it will take a while to get used to this,
I prefer the old style types of winning.
(Domination seems a bit redundant too.. like an easy version of conquest..)

I find culture to be a great addition to the game otherwise. Adds flavor and opens new strategies.

I sure do agree with you about the manual being vague! I didn't think that 236 pages could leave so much out.

The info about culture victories is in the Civilopedia (the 20,000 or 100,000 point thing).

I've found that a great deal of trawling about is needed to find the information, and that some is in the manual, some is in the Civilopedia and some is found by using the editor to check the game rules. Fortunately, pretty much all of it seems to be known by somebody on the forums. :D :D

I had the exact opposite experience - I was trying for a culture victory and had a civ that was bristling with wonders and improvements. What I didn't know was that playing on the easy setting against one other Civ (my very first attempt) I had no chance of ever making 100,000 points or even that was what I needed to do. My culture graph looked just a fraction away from victory, but in fact i was still 70,000 points short!! Still, I'm enjoying finding it all out, so can't complain too much. :D

Given that points are averaged out over all your turns, having an extra turn or two to make people happy probably would have only make a couple of points difference max. So don't sweat it. :)
