Am I correct in assuming "culturally linked starting positions" means that civs with the same characteristic are grouped togetner? I've only used it a couple of times and can see somewhat of a patern of grouped characteristics. My last game all with either militaristic and expansionist characteristics were together.

The English, vikings, and Mongols gobled all the goody huts with there scout before me, a celt, harding got started.

Just how is it supposed to work and what is the best way to select civs when using it?

thanks

It is that civs that historically were close are started together. So as the celts did start close to the English and the vikings that is who you start with. You tend to get one or 2 from further away (hence the mongols).

Actually, that is only partially true. The civs are all grouped into cultural groups (American, European, Asian, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern, IIRC). Turning on the culturally linked option means that civs from the same group will start in proximity to each other.

So quick survey - which do you prefer, linked or unlinked? I'm an "unlinker" from my early days of the game when I played Persia and got sick of being attacked by the @#$%^! Zulu every game. Now it's just habit. I suspect it can make life easier in higher level games since you're supposed to get along better with folks in your same culture group. I guess this translates to better trade deals and easier military alliances, but since I'm plugging away at reagent it doesn't seem to matter much.

Well, unlinked... due to the bug in C3C. I cannot stand Iroquis, Mayans and Incas anymore...

Ditto. I am just glad I finally found out why the Mayans and Incas were in every single game...

If you choose culturally linked, you always get the american cultural group.

As above, in Conquests, if you check "Culturally Linked" you will always get a bunch of American civs, especially the Maya and Inca (the Inca seem to appear in 19 out of every 20 culturally linked C3C games). It wouldn't be so bad except that they're all Agricultural (America, too, since I modded them to be Agricultural/Expansionist and the Inca to Agricultural/Religious [and more trait mods to even things out]) and all fairly agressive. Lots of big, agressive civs with early UUs knocking on your door in the early game is no fun.
