I currently have 3 great artists which I am saving up once all land is claimed. However I was wondering if you can have them all detonate in one city? which would be an instant 12,000 culture... and if so what sort of effect would this have?

Do not wait too long to do that, since I have read from playtesters that culture bombs do not work against established cities. You would want to do this against a few smaller cities on their borders. I am sure it would work pretty well as long as those cities dont have too much culture of their own.

Well when i get on tonight I will drop all three at once and see how the cookie crumbles :)

If you drop one it will give you 4000 culture...the next level to increase your boarders is 5000. So if you drop one more...that will give you 8000 culture...I don't remember if the next boarder increase is at 10,000 or 15,000 but if it's 15,000 then the 3rd bomb wouldn't really do you any good.

I could be totally wrong on that this though!

Well, I am building the forbidden palace in this frontier town, and already has been developing a fair amount of culture, but the city is like a wedge between two civs, so it will be fun. perhaps I should drop two bombs and then add the last as a super specialist.

Then again...if you are going to build the Forbidden Palace in it...it might be wise to just add the 3rd one for the 4000 culture to give it a jumpstart on the next increase! That would be better than adding it as a specialist...as far as culture is concerned...because you have to wait like 1000 turns from a specialist to get the 4000 culture! Once again...I could be wrong about the number of turns...but I think they get 4 culture per turn!?!?

In my current game I used a culturebomb in a conquered city after peace treaty and it worked great gaining lots of land. However the second bomb I used in exactly the same city caused no relevant gain of land.
I suppose you should use those culturebombs on the cities of yours that are close to the city that needs the space. Maybe that would have more effect than to use all three in one city

I would have to agree with you on that! Unless of course it is early on in the game and the other civ doesn't have a very strong hold on cities around the this one!

I have a game going right now where I have my huge empire on one side and another civ put a small town on the boarder of mine with a little space left for me to put a city...I put one in and dropped a bomb...they were down to no other tiles but the one the city was on and they were rioting the next turn!!! It was great!:)

Just because a culture bomb doesn't expand a city's border doesn't mean it's a "waste". You're still 4000 culture closer to achieving the next culture level. That's a lot.

It's also a defense from the other civ's culture as well. Because you gotta hate when they push back.

I've found that culture bombs are especially effective against Barbarian cities. I ventured into the northern part of the continent I was on in order to build a new city. I encountered the Barbarian City and decided to see what effect a culture bomb would have. I had just gained a Great Artist and sent him to my new city (which I built fairly near the Barb's). I dropped the bomb and within 2 turns the size 5 Barb city was mine. Not sure if it was just luck or if Barb cities have little/no culture of their own.

In my last game, England beat me to some Ivory, but had them 2 hex away from her city. So i build a town 2 hex away, drop a culture bomb and get the ivory. There was no way I could bet the town, but who needs it if you get the resources ;)

I totally agree with you that it is not a waste! But early on it could be used more "wisely" IMHO!

I thought culture bombs were cool to start and have used them effectively in the past games I have played. All the above suggestions are good ones. It a blast to see a cities borders expand that quickly. But, I like using artists as superspecilists especially early in the game. An artist will as a superspecilist will add 12 to 15 culture per turn to a city. Most of them I have seen add 14. So you say man that will take 285 turns so get 4000 culture out of it that I could have gotten in one big culture bomb. That is not necessarily the case. Remember there are certain civics (free speach)/ wonders/ building that increase that culture by a percentage. That 14 culture the artist added at the beginning can expand exponentilally. I think this is ultimately a key component to winning any culture victory. I had 3 cities produceing over 700 culture per turn by the time I won the game with a culture victory.

True dat. Unless you're going for a cultural victory and focusing culture on 3 specific cities, culture bombs are best used on your 'exterior' cities.

Culture bombs rock, and are hard to pass up, but for the most part I turn Great People into specialists. Then it's the gift that keeps on givin'.
