I understand that when starting the game "seeding" we will have the choice to adapt the faction somewhat with choices of colonists and goodies we take from earth. so it seems already that the games 8 "civs" wont be so limiting for re playability as it sounds. While I really like the backstories of the factions for so far as we have heard, I do hope we get the chance to design out own faction. I am thinking more than just changing the name, but also changing the flag, choosing the color, attributes etc, outside of having to mod a new one. In CK2 you can easy change your characters stats and flag at the beginning of the game quite easily.

I understand that there will likely be opportunity to mod and people will mod their own factions (#1 on the list: Iron Sky, #2 on the list: the SMAC factions) but I dont think it would be asking too much, will it?

Well, Civ5 engine has some core modding options, I think they'll stay.

Where did we hear anything about them?

some different interviews had a very small amount of info. Not more that the names of two of them (American Reclamation Corporation, Panasian Cooperative) the fact that they seem to be multinational amalgamations and that the Brazilian based faction is kinda militant.

It's not so much the details I am excited about, as we haven't heard the details, it's the fact that there exist background details in the first place that excites me, that the Firaxis team seems to have fleshed out a little future history we can bite into. I look forward to that experience.

It seems to me that the reason there's only 8 factions is that each faction is customizable during play. Your advantages will largely depend on your seeding choices, and your choice of affinity will change not just how you play, but also how your leader and units look. So, for example, there are likely at least 4 graphic versions of each leader (normal + 3 affinities), for 32 different options.

I do hope we get some background details, for now it's just names and Brazil is militant, that's it, no info as to what, where, when...

The one thing that makes me quit Civ5 before i even hit "play now" is the predefined civilizations.

I literally spend 10 minutes going over the list figuring out which civ i want to play, pick one, and then end up quiting anyway because 1) i'm stressed out from figuring out what civ to play and 2) the civ i chose really isn't 'my type' anyway

i know i know.. first world problems, but it kills me... :-(

I like the idea of being able to customize the faction before the start of the game (by picking colonists?).

But i also like the idea of adapting the current Religion system in a way that allows you to choose or gain benefits/abilities as you play.

For example, say you get a certain number of "slots" that can be filled. During the course of playing the game, you activate triggers, like say, you scout 100 tiles before anybody else, thus giving you first stab at the ability "+1 sight for all land units". If you turn it down, the next civ to reach the threshhold can decide if it wants it. But you do not get another chance for this ability. Also, once that slot is filled, you can't pick another ability for this slot.

Same with unique buildings - build 3 granaries in 3 cities first? get an option for a granary unique building.

Whatever.... i just dont want these predefined civs we have now.

Well there is a little bit of a question if the colonist/cargo chosen at the beginning is a one time benefit or an ongoing one.

However I do like the idea of ongoing benefits offered over the course of the game...particularly based on how you played the game.

But what happens when you play a larger map than normal ? There's only 8 factions, but there could be several leaders of the same faction on the map, allying or fighting each others.

Ever since Civ3 came out, my idea has always been that the wonders you build during the game should determine the traits of your civilization.

There is a maximum of 8 players. (bigger maps will just give you more space to spread out/be attacked by wildlife)

No evidence of more than one leader per faction.

I get the feeling that there won't be more than 8 players on any map, but even if that were not the case, there's nothing wrong with having two players with the same leader/faction on the same map. You can do that in Civ V now.
