D3DX9_31 Error

So, Civ4 & BTS installs. When I run it, it goes through it's little startup, and before I get to the opening movie the game CTDs, usually with no error. Going into the event viewer, I see that it's crashing on D3DX9_31. I've tried copying 'newer' versions of D3DX9, tried deleting them and reinstalling, compatibility mode, copying from my virtualbox xp install.... no joy.

This game used to run, then round about December 2012 suddenly the game stopped loading. I've searched for Windows 7 x64 updates that break Direct X 9.0c.... nothing out there.

Any ideas?

Don't remember if I did on the original install, which worked for a while, but on subsequent reinstalls yes, I did.

Have you re-installed the whole of directx9c fro Microsoft, not just the single file?

Video card drivers can bork DX9 in no time. Have you recently upgraded your drivers? I did mine a while ago and Civ4's video started tearing and streaking from time to time. Other games are fine, just Civ4 causes a problem. That may be your issue, as well.

Something was updated, I think. Honestly, this was back in December and I don't recall exactly what happened. It would have been a Windows update, however, and not me updating my video drivers. Maybe the update did the video drivers too, I dunno. All I know is, one day it worked, the next day it didn't.

Might be a moot point. I have some kind of infection or damage to the disk. May need to reformat.
