they just utterly annihilated me. :(

it was early 1800's, and i had amassed a pretty sizable force of cavalary to overrun my nieghbor. the two of us had been exchanging border towns for most the game, and i finally had the force to put an end to him once and for all.

i knew it was only a matter of time before i would have to face the golden horde (mongolia) to my south.. but i figured i'd have enough time to secure this other front first. the only way the mongolians could get to me was through a mountain pass, and i thought 10 or so riflemen in a hillside fort at the foot of it would be enough of a deterrent for the time being.

i was wrong.

2 town captures into my war.. kublai kahn (apparently bribed) DOW'd on me. and an endless sea of mega stacks started pouring through the pass into my side. my fort crumpled in the blink of an eye and my heartland was wide open. there was no stopping it. my garrisons fought bravely, but there was just too many.

never again will i underestimate the horde.

Never underestimate the other civs: back in vanilla days I was nearly wiped out by Gandhi. Now I keep a very watchful eye on the power graph, and direct my espionage accordingly. If you can acquire enough EPs to see their city details you should see them accumulating troops, which will almost certainly be intended to invade you (AI vs. AI wars, I find, tend to be on the small scale, and not very aggressively pursued); otherwise, use spies. It also helps to attend to diplomatic relations, and to note that some leaders are very aggressive (e.g. Genghis and Monty) and will declare war just because they feel like it.

AIs attack other AIs in exactly the same fashion as humans, there is no variance.

Other than EP, another option is merely stationing a unit in their border city (ies) if you have open borders, you can see where they're massing, what they're massing, and how much of it that way.

The war mechanics are the same for all AIs in terms of how the RNG affects them, but some (like shaka/monty/gk) have much lower values of RNG needed to declare, are willing to do it against stronger opponents, and are willing to do it even at pleased, which make them more dangerous.

The Khans' are scary bastards, that much is for sure. The same thing that happened to you happened to me not too long ago but it was Ghengis who was on the attack. But, instead of getting angry and weeping (the weeping I may have done) - I got even. The next map I played I made sure that he was on it. I played as Augustus Cesar and with luck, Ghengis ended up right next to me. I amassed an unstoppable army of 50 Praetorians supported by 25 Catapults and wipped the floor with that A-hole. But - he still scares me.

Regrading all these sneak attacks:
Can't you sign peace treaties with huge, backstabbing powers right before a war? As in trade resources, gold, techs, etc? I try to do that whenever I can right before I kill someone nearby so I don't get back stabbed. Am I imagining that working?

Sorry to hear about those damn mongorians breakin down your city wok

What was the horde make up of?

I had a similar situtation once where i was involve in a war with ragnar and sitting bull try to attack me. I had about about 20 rifleman on city on top of a hill. SB must have lost a hundred units to this city through 5 seperate waves of attack. one thing i always included in these defensive stacks is a healer. I usually have a explore max out on Medic station in the city to recover faster.

You guys are awesome, I was waiting for further city wok references. :worship:
What an excellent company we are. :wavey:

he had pretty much everything. alot of it looked left over, but he did have sufficient grenadiers.

i shoulda had a scout in his lands to keep an eye on him.

this was a prince game btw.

I love warmongers, hate tech whores.

Warmongers can be easily bribed to attack my rivals, they are my big club. Tech whores, on the other hand, make me very hard to become tech leader. Of course, being the only neighbor of shaka is no fun.

When ever I see a dangerous AI civ next to me in the beggining like the "mogorians" :) or Monty, Zulus, or Issy if I don't have her religion, I concentrate on eliminating them early, it's pretty easy since they are usually more interested in waging war than expanding or scientifically advancing. Once they get too big your in dire straights.
