I have come across the mother of all ******** situations.
As France, I decided to take advantage of an advantageous opportunity and crush an excommunicated Leon-Castile. Well for some reason, the Pope starts taking a liking to them after I blitz them and take three cities in one turn, and two the next. He reconciles them. My choices here are 1. maintain momentum (there are NO Spanish armies in the field), take the Pope rep hit and go for total annhilation of the Spanish faction 2. wait for things to cool down and continue 3. sue for peace. Seeing that the pope is about 70, I figure he's on borrowed time anyway, and one of my cardinals is the top Preferati, and I have perfect relations with most Catholic nations. So I go for it, figure that even if I get excommunicated, it'll last a turn or two, I'll get voted into the Papacy, and have perfect relations again. Its like 1130, BTW.
Well the bastard decides to live for another 15 years. Crap. Well everything you think happens happens. So I figure, after a few years, that this guy is REALLY on his way out, so I take advantage of being excommunicated already and decide to go for a quick kill of Aragon, too, little problem-causers they are. This earns me a crusade to Toulouse, which every Catholic faction enthusiastically joins. I proceed to defend my castle, kick lots of Crusader ass, and get "Absymal" rep...with everyone.
Then the Pope dies. But by Preferati cardinal dies first, and anyway I don't get reconciled. So I do all kinds of Pope ass-kissy things like gift him money, don't fight Catholics, and I build a cathedral in Paris. I get up to like 3 crosses of rep, praying for reconciliation.
Wrong. I get another crusade to Toulouse for all my hard work. Rinse, wash, and repeat.
Pope dies, new pope comes along, I even vote for the guy...and I'm still not reconciled.
I'm now at the point where I'm utilizing the entirety of my empire's resources defending against a third crusade to Toulouse, which is on its second wave of armies. Every time I defend myself, my rep immediately bottoms out with all Catholics. Everyone is at war with me, no one will make peace with me. The Pope will not even accept my gifts. As soon as things are going good, crusades keep coming. I cannot get out. Drums, drums in the deep. I cannot get out. A shadow moves in the dark. I cannot get out. They are coming.
