Dear Fireaxis.

I have been a faithful player of all Civilizations editions ever since Civiliazation I came out in 1991. Not only do I love all the Civ games from I to V, but also the Colonization games. Not only am I a solid SP player in all games, but also a seasoned multiplayer in Civ III to V. I have spent many hours playing Civ online with friends and strangers alike. I must really say that the Civ family must be the best games ever produced, at least in my opinion.

When Civ V finally came out after years of waiting, I must say that I was thrilled. A game based on the combat engine from the epic game panzer General couldn't be wrong. I was indeed right. Even though many veteran civ players have dismissed the game, I must say that I love it. It is the best Civ edition so far, at least in my opinion.

However, many bug issues started to manifest itself in SP as well as MP shortly after I had acquired the game. Since I do not play SP anymore, I will leave the matter aside in this thread. Concerning MP, though, I have alot to say about Civ V.

First of all, the game has been buggy through all the patches, including the last one, which in fact, made the game unplayable. It is now impossible to play a 6 player game online without the game crashing before turn 5. Civ V MP has in fact been unstable through the entire life of the game. In MP, players see regular crashes in game, forcing thems to restart game in Windows and reload from game lobby. Furthermore, it has proved impossible to play a large map with 12 players without the game crashing 100 % sure. Even 8 players standard map is extremely hard to play without players waiting hours as a consequence of lags or constant reloading caused by game crashing. Even a 6 player game has almost unsurmontable obstacles when launching, causing only the most patient of the MP players to actually be able finish a small map game. Furthermore, it has proved impossible to play Civ V in DX11 without fatal consequences for MP games. Lastly, many small bug issues omnipresent throughout the (MP) game are indeed frustrating.

I feel that I have been extremely patient in waiting for Fireaxis to fix the MP bug issues already present from Civ V's release. I understand that it is impossible to make a bug free MP game, but Civ V MP really seems downprioritized by the Fireaxis developers. Take Civ IV for example. Yes, there were some bug issues and some problems in game, but nothing close to the epic failures we regularly see in Civ V MP. I therefore feel like Sid Meier has abandoned me and many other faithful Civ MP players.

Please Fireaxis. Do you really want to abandon your faithful core players?? As a matter of fact, the only computer game I play is Civ. Now, I wont open Civ V again before MP is properly programmed. Why don't you do it??? Is it too expensive for you? If it is, please tell the players so that we can pool our resources and hire a programmer for you.

IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO MAKE A PLAYABLE MP GAME SID MEIER AND FIREAXIS? PLEASE!!?

Best regards,

Henrik

I really hope they can hotfix this. Never been so huge problems after the other patches. It's totally unplayable as it is now.

Attaching a poll to a rant doesn't make it stop being a rant. :-p

Personally I've had a lot of fun with MP, but I only play with friends.

Yep, it has been buggy all the way, but OK to play friends, or steam mates, so you can reload when it's needed. But after last patch, you can't play at all. At least not 6 player +. Hope they are adressing this quickly.

Ive had the same issues. Me and my "civ5 pals" tried to play some games with the new patch (the patch changes seems really nice btw). The games crashed all the time. As luckystrike and donhenriko mentioned, before patch it was playable. Some bugs occured sometimes but we could reload the game to fix it. But now it really crashes all the time.

The only thing I do on my free time is playing civ5. Thats really all I got. Firaxis, Im serious now, please take all the money I get from working and hire someone to fix it. ASAP

I am genuinely shocked that anyone is still playing MP at this point. Even if it wasn't buggy, the turn structure is so fundamentally flawed that I don't see how it could possibly be fun.

Really bad.

in general, civ mp is like age of empires mp or any other mp.

doink rushes usually win and if not then a quick slingshot wins, and i don't like the environment. that said i have played civ 3 multiplayer and 5 multiplayer just to try it and compared to civ 3, 5 is more challenging. its harder to execute a post-rush recovery and since you arent building 30 axemen - i am not building 16 archers.

Civ 5 has a better "feel" than the others in multiplayer for me because i can't capture your city and kill you with a scout since you went worker first and went to explore. also, defending yourself from a rush seems like a naturally built-in mechanic in civ 5 - but i can't punish your happiness by never accepting peace.

With the new nerfs it feels like certain elements are re-appropriated to prevent some of the crappy things about "this genre" of strategy games and while they didn't fix their genre or even their game - they finally made multiplayer into an environment where more can happen and everyone has a "little more time." which is, in itself, a good thing.

Edit: Normally i see no more than 1-2 games "hosted" on steam at any time and its not easy to find a game - the better parts of civ dont seem very dooable in multiplayer in general, no matter the installment. so i didn't vote in the poll and i dont feel the poll really asks anything. no offense.

That's not my problem. I like MP. I agree that there are some issues with the turn stucture that causes problems, but nothing serious. It would of course be nice to fix the "wait til the clock has ended in war" problem in a new patch, but first and foremost they must make this edition bug free.

I totally agree with you, but this improvement means nothing if the game is unplayable due to bugs and regural crashes.

I voted bad. I successfully played some 6 players game but not without 1 or 2 guys destroyed before turn 100 to make sure that the game will continue correctly!

They must work on mp now imo. Turns a a bit faster since last patch tho.

Umm you have supposedly been playing all these years but don't remember when the "Play the World" expansion, just didn't work at all. Period. It was a multiplayer version of the same game with barely any additional content, and the multiplayer didn't work. This was like over 10 years ago. Get with the program, they have never cared about MP.

I hate to break it to you, but the MP player base is a tiny tiny fraction of the overall player base, so really they just don't care that much. It is under 5%.

Nobody cares about MP. Civilization has always been about the singleplayer.

The poster above me summarized it quite well.

As someone who chooses to play Civ over AOE, I don't play Civ like an RTS online. I play with real-life friends, and we build slow and steady, end up with large late-game empires, threaten each other, send troops to city-states for proxy wars, engage in embargos and sanctions, humiliate each other, and generally have a blast pretending to be world rulers. We don't play to win, but play for the roleplaying fun, and it's much more rewarding than earning a win by beating people over the head.

I haven't played Civ V MP post-patch, though. Since my friends and I play a single game of Civ over several months, I only have a small dedicated crew of 3-4 players. I hope that number's small enough to not run into problems with this new patch...

Who plays MP? I'm sure you'll say something like "I do!" but the odds of getting any significant amount of "good" players in one game for 4-6hrs to get even a single satisfying game are so astronomically low that for them to even consider investing in MP seems ridiculous.

The biggest advancement in Civ multiplayer was when they put options for the AI to jump in a players place when they leave and even then barely anyone ever tried multiplayer.

I'd reconsider this if they somehow came up with a well paced scenario that played out over say an hour. However, that's not why I buy a civ game. <.<

Well, if you're lucky enough to find a handful of patient friends to play with, I can see how MP could be your preferred environment. No big deal, it's reasonable for them to want a fun game for their playstyle too. <shrug>

Wow and I thought single player had it's problems. I feel for you MP guys.
