Death of an Empire

please continue

General Das was sitting in his office at the Foreign Ministry building in Salamanca. The Eastern Army Group is not expected to fight anytime soon, so he left his army in the capable hands of his second in command, General Cortez. He is sifting through all communications trying to locate the whereabouts of General Civantor, the Southern Army Group, and the First Fleet.

As Das frets over the disappearance of the Southern Army Group, General Knas resumes the war against the English. Artillery is sent to the mountains just outside of the new English capital of Canterbury. Knas sends his calvary regiments east to lay waste to the city of Coventry. The 1st and 2nd elite calvary regiments roll up to and in the city with minimal losses. Coventry, England’s Iron producing center was protected by a single regiment of veteran pikemen. As the 1st and 2nd calvary regiments were busy raising the Iroquois flag over the Coventry barracks, the remainder of the attacking force, continues north to Newcastle.

General Knas exists his field tent to watch the morning shelling of Canterbury, he notices the arrival of a regiment of Iroquois swordsmen. The 2nd Regiment of Blades is the oldest active unit in the entire Iroquois Armed forces. This regiment was at the Battle of Zimbabwe and fought beside General Cochrane on that glorious day. (There is one other Blade Regiment in the army, the 4th Regiment of the Blades which is part of the Central Defensive Force and assigned to guard the Foreign Ministry and People’s Palace.) General Knas has no use for these archaic men and orders them to charge the city. The Regiment does not wait until the cannon fire stops. They just run and charge and are met by the rifles bullets of the English Defenders. The 2nd Blade’s fight the English rifles for hours and as dusk approaches, the rifle fire slowly subsides and the Blades carry the day. As Knas realizes that his archaic swordmen just defeated a fresh rifle regiment, he knows the time has come. The 5th Calvary, the only calvary regiment in this force, is given the word to attack. The English, tired from the previous days fighting, put up little resistance. As the sun set on Canterbury, so does the English flag.

–

Reisbach rushes into general Das’ office. "Word from the First Fleet."

"Well?"

"General Civantor’s forces were fired upon by the Chinese Navy as they were sailing for the English colonies. He has decided to attack and has landed in China just north of Hongchow."

"That is great. I would advise, sir, that we send word to Moscow and inform them of this Chinese aggression."

"That is a good idea General. It will be done."

"I will return to Allegheny where my army is gathering. We may need to set sail to assist Russia against the Babylonians."

__

General Civantor lands his army north of Hongchow, cutting it off from the rest of China. The landing is covered by naval bombardment by the Frigates of the First Fleet. All reports that the Chinese military is weak and obsolete. Refugees from the city are captured and interrogated. It appears that Hongchow is defended by mere Pikemen. Seeing am easy victory, General Civantor orders the 1st Rifles and 1st and 5th Calvary to remain and take Hongchow while the remaining forces (2nd-4th Rifles, 2nd-4th, 6th and 7th Calvary Regiments turn North) and march to Nanking. He also orders the First Fleet to sail back to Philadelphia and pick up 4 of his remaining 6 calvary regiments. The 1st Calvary charge the defenders but are fought back. As the units withdraw, the Veteran 5th calvary earns its promotion as they charge through their comrades and into the city. The 1st Calvary returns to recover and the Iroquois have a foothold in China.

__

The War in England is progressing in the way that is more than acceptable for the Northern Army Group. Canterbury and Coventry have fallen with little losses. The NAG quick marches north to Newcastle and English citizens are captured working in the fields. Under questioning, they reveal the defenses of Newcastle and the rumors that Queen Elizabeth has fled to one of her colonies. Newcastle, and Oxford to the far north, believe that the war is lost but refuse to surrender. The Northern Army Group does not even pause to set up a proper siege, they just arrive at the city and attack. The city falls like a house of cards and the army moves on. Oxford is the last non-Iroquois controlled city on the continent. It will not hold out for long.

__

General Civantor arrives at the outskirts of Nanking and promptly begins his shelling. Before too much damage is done. The 6th Calvary regiment is sent in to weaken the veteran Rifles. The 6th charge and the citizens and defenders of Nanking panic. Rather then making a stand against the invading horde, they flee to the ships anchored in the harbor. As the ships set sail, the First Fleet sinks them in the channel. Damage from the attacking forces is minimal and as Civantor surveys the city, he decides to set up his HQ. The city harbor, barracks and marketplace remain standing and in the city center, he promotes the 6th Calvary to elite status. Word is sent back to Salamanca that more Rifle regiments are needed to hold these new acquisitions to the Iroquois Empire.

__

General Knas joins up with his calvary regiments overlooking Oxford. The winter is setting in and his men are getting cold. "We must end this before the winter storms come." He stands on the frozen tundra and looks towards the city, "Why would anyone establish a city out here? We mine as well get this over with. ATTACK!" The experienced men of the Northern Army Group warm up as their armies charge into the guns of the waiting English but it is no contest. Eight Full Strength Calvary Regiments against a conscript rifle and regular pikemen. General Knas walks into the city and prepares to wait out the winter. His campaign against the English appears to be over. England has been forced from the land.

General Knas is sitting in his allocated office in the caputred barracks when two galleys arrive in the harbor with orders. General Knas reads the dispatch and looks at his aide. "I hope you like Won Ton Soup because we are heading to China."

__

Eight more Calvary Regiments (2 elite) set sail to China.

Map of Northern England

General Civantor was not up to giving his army time to rest. The Chinese city of Xinyian lay a few days march to the west. The city was the home to the Chinese Horse pastures. Those horse must be brought under Iroquois control. The elite Calvary regiments in Hongchow march north to join the army in its siege of Xinyian. The siege begins in the traditional Civantor way with bombardment followed by a strong calvary charge. As General Civantor expected, Zinyian fell with no loss to his attacking forces. As Civantor was busing sacking the Chinese city, the First Fleet sailed up the coast to being shelling the port of Canton.

__

As General Civantor took this third Chinese city and General Knas began the trip to China, and English emissary arrives in Salamanca. The once proud English empire has met the fate of the Zulus, Americas and Greeks before them.

"The English people ask the mighty Iroquois for peace."

"What can you give us," ask Reisbach.

"We have nothing left. Our coffers are empty. Our resources are no longer ours."

"I see. As you may not be aware, an entire army group, the Eastern, is currently en route to your northern island colonies. To avoid more death... Give us these colonies."

"But... Sir... That will cripple us."

"Better to be crippled than dead."

"You are right. We will give you those cities in exchange for peace."

"It is done."

Peace has been reached between England and Iroquois. England is down to one city located at the tip of one of the French Island. In an attempt to improve relations with Egypt, the former English colonies are gifted to Egypt. The Iroquois Nation could not get troops there in time to defended them from Chinese troops in the area.

__

Chinese resistance is light as General Civantor marches towards Canton. After days of marching, his army is near full strength. The only lost regiments are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Rifles which were left to defend the captured cities. The rest of the army was at full strength when the Iroquois wave crashed into Canton. The Cantonese put up a valiant defense but once again, the better trained and led Iroquois forces were victorious.

__

The battle of Canton marked a change in the Chinese Defenses. The first cities to fall to the illustrious Iroquois armies were comprised mostly of Pikeman with a few rifles thrown in. As the SAG moves into the heart of China, the defenses are stronger.

__

General Civantor sits in his campaign tent planning his next move. Should he move north and capture the Chinese capital, Beijing or move west towards the silk fields of Shanghai? He is also pondering when those extra rifle regiments will arrive in order to hold these cities. Both his questions are answered as General Knas lands his Northern Army on the outskirts of Beijing. As he prepared to move west, General Cortez arrives with fresh rifle regiments.

"General Das sends his regards and complements, General." says Cortez.

General Civantor eyes the other man suspiciously wondering what Cortez is doing in China. "Why thank you General. And what brings you to China? What scheme is General Das up to now?"

"Why nothing sir. I bring you the Rifles you requested and to inform you that once you and Knas crush the Chinese, you are to return to Salamanca for orders. I am ordered to command the new Chinese Army."

General Civantor joins his men and continues to march towards Shanghai. Before he reaches the silk city, he must take care of Tsingtao. He pushes his men hard knowing that if his attack should falter, Cortez will take command. Civantor could not see bare to see his proud men under the command of the sniveling lap-dog. He would rather destroy his army than to allow that. Civantor’s death and that of the SAG would not be met on the fields of Tsingtao, fighting with fear in their hearts they push through the Chinese defenders and take yet another Chinese city.

__

General Knas, stands outside the city of Beijing knowing that his army is about to take yet another foreign capital. Through his spy glass he can see the Chinese Rifle throughout the city. Today will be a day of death. The First Calvary charges and are thrown back, they counter attack and flow into the city. Through the smoke and fire, Knass tries to determine the outcome of the attack before deciding where to send the next assault. As the sporadic gunfire dwindles to nothing, the Chinese flag still flies over the city. Not a man returns from the 1st Calvary. The Iroquois have suffered their first defeat at the hands of the Chinese. Angry over the total destruction of his elite Regiment, Knas orders all his troops to attack. The fight continues into the night. As the sun sets, the men continue to fight by the light of the thousands of fires burning throughout the city. As midnight approaches, the battle still rages, Knas looks around and sees the men of the 2nd Blades again awaiting orders. Knas calls the Colonel over and tells him: "Follow Me." General Knas charges into the city at the head of the 2nd Blade. The Blades descend into the city like a band of raging barbarians killing everything in their path. Men, women, children and wounded are dispatched by Knas and his Blades. They fight up to the Palace steps where Mao is rallying the last of his defenders. The Blades fall on Mao and as dawn breaks, Beijing falls. It will take months to clean up the fallen city and subjugate the citizens. It will take that long to make the NAG into a fighting force as well. General Knas has found new respect for the archaic 2nd Blades.

__

The Chinese army, massed at Shanghai fight like no other Chinese army ever did. General Civantor, become complacent at the lackluster defense put by the Chinese is shocked. After the fall of Tsingtao, he leaves his wounded elite units in the city and marches on with his veteran calvary. Unaware of the bloodshed at Beijing, he unleashes 3 calvary regiments at the defenders. The attack is quickly repulsed and as Civantor watches his men retreat, he is aware that the 7th Calvary will never return. The day is not even half over and this is the bloodiest day for the SAG in the China Invasion. He begins a traditional siege and as his elite troops arrive, attempts another attack. This attack is again repulsed but the Chinese forces are weakening. Civantor hears word that General Cortez’s army will be at Shanghai in two days, knows that there is no time. He takes a dead man’s horse and tells his calvary to mount up. The General leads his units in a final attack. As the mass of Iroquois calvary charge, the General is hit. He remains in his saddle and with his sword held high, leads his men through the Chinese rifle fire. The attacking men break through the city walls and as soon as they reach the city square, the Chinese defenders flee, right into Cortez’s rifles. The Battle of Shanghai is over.

__

After the two days of fighting at Shanghai and Beijing, the last two Chinese cities on the mainland quickly fall. The Chinese colonies, all that is left of the mighty empire beg for peace which the Iroquois Government grants. General Civantor recovers from his wounds and arrives with General Knas in Salamanca to a hero’s welcome. They are both commended for their defeat of the China. They captured a total of 9 Chinese cities at the loss of only 2 Calvary Regiments. Knass’ army is returned to the Province of London while Civantor’s men return to America. Both Generals are offered governorships of their respected territories. Both agree on the condition that they can lead their armies in future campaigns. Prime Minister Reisbach agrees and also allows Das, Knas and Civantor to remain the capital cities, "to remove the stain of anther civilization." General Cortez is given the governorship of China with orders to make sure that there is NO problem with the Silk delivery. He is also ordered not to lead an army outside of China without approval of the high command. The world watches as the Iroquois people defeated Greece, England and China in quick order and wonder where they will turn their eyes next. Only Babylon is unafraid. Russia continues to make overtures of friendship and cooperation, fearing the neighboring Babylon more than the overseas Iroquois.

The map attached is the the First Fleet getting ready to invade Hongchow.

Northern China:

I was rather disappointed with the defense put up by China. Not one offensive unit or even a counter attack. Those must have been in the transports that are lying at the bottom of the ocean between England and China. Also, took 9 Chinese cities on their main island and not one worker :( Now I will have to build them in order to improve China. Not one leader either. I had close to 10 if not more elite units attacking at various points. Not like the Invation of America where I picked up two in almost back-to-back battles. Such is the way of random number generators.

While Reisbach played an exellent role, of "sole and sovereign ruler" of Iroquois Socialistic Republic, while Das personally thinked off every Reisbach's move.

"So, Knas before you leave, do you have any new Ideas? How about supporting Russia against Babylon?"

Quoted from Iroquatanica 2000 list of special terms
Socii - Iroquois Garrisons under Communist regime

You could use that in your story!

Well.

Nice story. Say, could you fit me into the plot? :)
(I'm from Baltimore, so if that city name is there - it's 13 in the list, I think - and just to think Baltimore was 2nd or 3rd largest 200 years ago! (in real life, of course :)).

A bit off topic, but are there any small/normal earth maps? (similar to Marla's - I guess the scripts could be tweaked for correct city placement).

I'm going to lose my job because of you. I've been reading your story all day. Just one question. Do you actually keep track of each unit? For example, how did you remember what the "2nd Blades Unit" had done before? I can't wait for your next installment. Kick your damn sister off the computor!

General Das and Prime Minster Reisbach were sitting in conference in Salamanca planning the next phase in the world domination for the Iroquois people.

"Well, General. What do you suggest?"

"Sir, General Civantor has loaded up his transports and is sailing towards Russia. They may need some assistance against the hated Babylonians and Civantor has proved his abilities at taking and securing beach-heads."

"Fine. What about the rising tensions between the Indians and French? Who should we support?"

"I would suggest that we support the French. The Indians are pretty strongly entrenched and we will need the French forces to soften them up for us. We can land the Eastern Army Group on the horse lands we annexed from Greece. It is a short sail from Corinth."

As the two leaders were discussion their options, General Knas comes into the room with a vial of a dark liquid substance. "As you gentlemen know, our scientists have recently discovered some practical uses for this black oil. A supply has just been discovered in the French desert near the city of Marseilles."

General Das stands up: "Well that settles it. I will take the Eastern Army Group into the French Desert and seize this oil deposit. We can not let it fall into Indian hands."

"But General, that will mean war with France, not India.," please the Prime Minister.

"Then so be it. We will support India not France. The Zulus will follow us as they have for centuries."

__

The Eastern Army Group lands to the west of Marseilles and begins its desert march. An French envoy approaches the army and demands its immediate withdraw. General Das hands over the declaration of war and Marseilles quickly prepares for attack. General Das unleashes his veterans of the Greek Wars against the French defenders. The French, like the Greeks before them, fall to the might of the Iroquois Armies. The Iroquois losses are higher then expected and the EAG is forces to sit and garrison Marseilles until either reinforcements arrive or the troops are back to full strength. The French oil deposits are now in Iroquois hands.

As the troops recuperate in Marseilles, a quick sortie is sent out to the French desert city of Chartes. A simple test of the French defenses turns into a full scale assault and Chartes falls. General Das sends word to General Knas to bring the Northern Army Group to France. The Iroquois positions are now bracketed in by the French to the north and India to the south. Unless a treaty can be worked out with India, the EAG and NAG will be fighting a two front war.

__

Back in Salamanca, the Prime Minister has been in negotiations with the Indian Ambassador. "It is agreed then, Mr. Ambassador. The Indians will help us in this crusade against the wicked French in exchange for a supply of coal." As the Indian Ambassador leaves, the English one shows Arrives.

"Mr. Prime Minister. The English would like to show our respect to your glorious culture and assist you in the war against the French."

With these two meetings, India and England declare war on France. It is now 4 on 1.

__

As General Knas arrives to secure the new Iroquois-India border, General Knas moves north to lay siege to Paris and Lyons. Lyons is the next city to fall. Ships of the Second Fleet have been shelling the city since the start of hostilities so when the EAG calvary arrive, the city falls after the second assault. The EAG turns east to march on the French capital of Paris.

Along the march, the Iroquois troops are harassed by French attacks. The army hardly stops but some troop are not at full strength to assault Paris. The army arrives on the hills south of the city and General Das looks through his spyglass to prepare his attack. What he sees, surprises him. Regiment after Regiment of Indian Elephants are attacking the French walls. The French repeal wave after wave of Indians. The fields west of Paris are littered with hundreds of dead men and beast. The men of the Eastern Army Group are faced with an enemy they have never faced before, fear.

Das does not let his men dwell on the prospect of charging the same defenses that threw back the Indians. He orders his men to mount up and leads the first charge himself. The Iroquois 1st Elite Calvary Regiment charge the southern ramparts of the city, shortly after the last Indian attack is repulsed. The French, not expecting the attack, rally and throw their reserves against the new threat. The 1st Calvary retreats after destroying the French Riflemen. Before Das is safely behind his lines, the next wave of horsemen charge the city. The Iroquois continue their assaults well into the night until the city falls. Das walks into the city expecting to find Joan of Arc in irons but only finds out that the French leader has fled north to the City of Orleans.

__

Talks between India and Persia brings Alexander into the war. China also sides with England and joins the crusade against the French.

__

The French, needing some sort of moral victory launch an offensive against the English capital of Lancaster. The results are as expected, the crippled English empire is no match for the modernized French armies. Lancaster falls and the Queen is beheaded and the English empire is no more.

__

Das, not wanting to miss Joan, orders his troops to march on Orleans, leaving behind his wounded troops with the knowledge that a Infantry Regiment is en route to defend the city. As his army marches north, the French, in an attempt to capitalize on their success against the English, launch a counterattack in an effort to re-take Paris. Knights and Bowmen are thrown against the wounded calvary regiments in the city garrison. The 5th Veteran Calvary Regiment is destroyed. Before the French can retake the city, the 1st Regiment, led by their Colonel Sitting Bull rush from the barracks to repulse the French assault. Sitting Bull wins the day and returns to Salamanca to help with the concept of Battlefield Medicine.

As the EAG marches onwards to Orleans, the Second Fleet, led by the Destroyer Apache sail into the French Straights in an attempt to cut off Joan’s last escape route. Das arrives at the outskirts of Orleans and finds the last of the Indian Regiments limping south back to India. Das decides to follow the same strategy at Orleans that he followed at Paris and orders his troops to quickly assault the city. Once again, Das leads the first wave and this time, he leads it right into the city center and Orleans falls but once again, Joan has fled the city.

__

The Eastern Army Group turns east and marches towards the port cities of Rheims and Tours in a last minute attempt to catch the French ruler. Joan instead flees France in a small fishing boat and is chased by the Apache but successfully makes the crossing. Rheims and Tours fall as General Knas takes out his anger on missing Joan.

__

General Das is waiting at the port of Tours for the transports to enter the straight so that he can cross and continue the war. As he is pacing the docks, he is approached.

"General Das? I have something you may be interested in."

The General turns around to see a person covered in grease from head to toe.

"My name is Chieftess, General. I have developed a new weapon that you may be interested in. It flies in the air and drops explosives on the enemy. I call it a bomber."

General Das says nothing as he turns and looks across the water wondering if this ‘bomber’ will be of any use.

General Das was loading up a transport is the former French city of Rheims when he hears a strange rumbling in the sky. He looks up to see a pair of large mechanical birds flying towards the city. As the ‘birds’ land in a clearing outside the city, the local populous flees in terror. General Das calmly approaches the strange beast with his alert body guards at the ready. A hatch in one of the machines opens an out steps Chieftess. "I promised you a new weapon and here it is. Would you like a demonstration?"

"Why yes I would."

"Well then come aboard and we will see what we can do."

The General and Chieftess take off with the second bomber close behind. They fly over the French straights along the path of the pending Iroquois invasion. As the approach the city of Dijon, General Das spots a French Frigate, The King Louis, sailing to intercept the Second Fleet. Word is radioed to Captain Eric of the Destroyer Apache. The two bombers fall on the French ship and do some serious damage. When the Apache arrives, The King Louis is so heavily damaged that one shell from the Apache’s guns sends her to the bottom of the straights. General Das is so pleased with the new weapon that he appoints Chieftess as General of thel Iroquois Air Corps. Now with the Second Fleet and the IAC, the planned campaign is much easier.

__

The 2nd through 5th Elite Calvary Regiments, 2nd and 3rd Infantry Regiments and the 6th Calvary land to the south of the French mustard producing center of Dijon. The invasion force is supported by an artillery unit. The city of Dijon has been under blockade by the Persian navy for some time and supplies have been trickling in from the south. With the arrival of the expeditionary force, the city is now cut off. Dijon falls relatively easily and the Iroquois troops prepare for the arrival of reinforcements led by General Das himself and his vaunted 1st Calvary.

__

Catherine the Great walks into the Prime Minister’s chambers in Salamanca. "Prime Minister. The Russian People thank you for you show of force off the enslaved city of Kiev. We appreciate all you have done for us. Your presence brought hope to our people of Kiev who have thrown off the Babylonian yoke and returned to us. For this, we will assist you in you righteous crusade against the evils of France. As a gift we present you with this, pure 100% Russian Vodka. Drink in good health." With this speech, Russian enters the coalition against France.
__

As General Das comes ashore at Dijon he is met by a dispatch from General Knas near the Iroquois-India border. "General Das. Currently my men and I are developing an armored attack vehicle which we believe will render our horse troops obsolete. This ‘Tank’, as we call it, will house a large turret and should be operational before ‘Operation Champagne’ begins."

__

Word is sent to General Civantor and the First Fleet. "Begin sailing to Eastern France. Stop in America and rearm your men with the latest weaponry. The Destroyer Cherokee will be awaiting your arrival."

__

General Das leaves Dijon and marches towards the next French city (forgot name). The Iroquois Air Corp continues to bomb French positions in Middle Franch. Ships of the First Fleet bombard Frances Third capitol. The Apache sails in to the Lost Sea to intercept French shipping and reinforcements from Eastern France. The Persian Navy is busy destroying French improvements in Middle France and is sailing a Galley from Mycenae to Middle France.

__

Note: Middle France consists of an island with four cities, virtually in a row. Dijon is the northern most city with the new capitol as the southern most. Avignon (I think) is the next city facing the Iroquois advance. It is closer to Occupied France than Dijon. Screen shot will be posted over the weekend, or tonight.

Scholar Comments: It has been debated on what Operation Champagne is or what the timetable was. No military operation was ever undertaken under this code name. Some scholar believe that the operation was referring to an Invasion of India since General Knas is defending the border as he developed his tank corp. Some believe that is was the code name for the invasion of Middle France, which was launched earlier than originally scheduled.
