I don't know if this has been changed for BNW, but with 679 hours of playing I haven't noticed it before.

In my current game I made a DoF with France. When I go to the diplomacy screen it says we have a DoF. However, I made that DoF several turns ago and it believe it should have expired by now. Furthermore, if I click "Discuss" it seems I'm able to make a new DoF with France.

The problem is I'm planning on attacking whenever my DoF ends before the Zulus defeat them. If I ignore the DoF I will be beaten up by the Zulus, Etopians and Incas (tried it). Is this a bug or when does the DoF / effect of the DoF expire? Will it last for the whole game? In that case I should REALLY reconsider doing DoFs even though I am liking RAs more and more.

Not sure how long a DoF is remembered, but yes, after it expires it will be remembered. If you intend to attack someone later, don't DoF them earlier in the game.

Has anyone noticed how many turns we're taking? My soldiers are all set to attack :)

Not sure how many more turns it will take, but you could just sign open borders in the mean time just send in a few units to partially blockage one of the cities so Shaka can't take it?

The Decleration of Friendship modifiers expires at the same time as the DoF itself.. just to throw it out there.

It definitely doesn't. I've experienced the same thing as the OP. DoF expires, can offer a new one, but still not allowed to denounce/DoW without being a backstabber.

Everytime the DoF expired, the modifier "We have a Decleration of Friendship" modifier disappears and "You have a DoF with one of their ally" also disappears.

DoF lasts 50 turns (on Standard speed) but can be renewed after 20 turns and if you do renew DoF, the turn counter will restart with 50. The turncounter can (now, after the latest hotfix) be seen under diplomacy - global.

You can offer a new one before the old one expires - notice that you'll see the option to get a DoF while the tooltip says you already have a Declaration of Friendship. This is why the 'has expired' notification (which isn't new) doesn't come up that often - most of the time, one side or another will offer to renew before the DoF expires.

But yes, if the old DoF has expired, there are no penalties at all for attacking the other civ beyond the usual warmonger penalties.

Great, thanks.

I often find myself being a warmonger, even once after I took just one CS they considered me a warmonger. Will that also go away after some time? Does the AI get more angry with me if I attack a friendly CS of mine rather than one without a relationship, or is it based on their friendship with that particular CS?

I don't know what good DoFs do if you can can also make a DoW with the friend. The only time you can get an advantage with a DoF is when you DoF Gustavus Adolphus and get that GP bonus. DoFs also have the ai players like be nicer to you.

Taking a CS or the last remaining city of another civilization is considered genocide and you will have the most extreme hatred upon you by all other civs.

You get more favorable trades, you can trade lump sums of gold, and you get reduced diplomatic penalties with civs you've declared friendship with. DoFs are a warmonger's best friend.

That's interesting. I guess I should keep them alive which I've often chosen to do. Often easier than raising the cities. Only problem is that they might denounce you, but no need to worry in other areas.

Does the warmonger status ever go away?

This is not true in the game I am playing. DOF has expired with France, but it currently says it is still going with a negative number of turns left. I can also still get DOF benefits, like trading for lump sums of cash. I went ahead and attacked them and also got the warmonger penalty.

The messed up thing is that I was also friends with Arabia. They are mad at me for DOW on France, but because we also have a DOF which cannot expire, I can still get benefits from them.

This doesn't make any sense and seems like an error occurring with the new patch.

Thinking of this, I can't make up my mind what is better. If I kill them off I will get a bad standing, but if I don't kill them off they may denounce me for the rest of the game getting me into a bad standing. Which one is worse?

Oh, and by the way - when someone denounces me or insults me there's most often an option to bow in front of him or to insult him back ("You'll pay for this" for instance). I've never know what the difference is. Is it only my relation to the one insulting me, or will others react to what I tell him? Which one is better and when?

This has been driving me nuts, but I'm starting to see a pattern. It seem like if you Dof, say, Napoleon while he is at peace, then he gets declared on by someone, your DoF will not end until he makes peace. I think this is to prevent precisely the kind of dogpiling you are planning on engaging in. ;)

Killing them off is definitely worse, though by that point, you may have sealed your fate as a warmonger in the world's eyes. Their denunciation's effect on you is determined by their relations with other civs, so the denunciation is probably going to affect less than the entire world.

Thank you very much. This would explain it.

This explains it all precisely. Read it , it will end those speculations :)
