I am. That is enough. I have all the promise that each day offers to me. I am. The past is nothing but what has brought you here and the future is what you make of today. I am. We are each a force in life.

Hippies! HELP!!!!! MOTHER!!!! Where did I put my M-203? Darn thing never about when you need it...
"Yes ladies and gentlemen, I think the sixties were a waste of time. All that peace and love bulls**t never worked. Now I think anger shall work - Let's all get angry!"
- Dave Gleeson of the Screaming Jets giving his postmodernist deconstruction of the ideologies of the period in question in the midst of a charming little ditty entitled: "Fat Rich C***s"

As you can probably deduce, I ain't a big fan of the turn on, tune in and drop out ethos. The music is alright, though

Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you.

Can someone tell me what it's about? It's long to read and has many expressions I don't quite get so I'd like to know if it's worth the effort

Well you have to take from it the best you can, but basically we have four intellectuals of the day: Timothy Leary, Gary Snyder, Alan Watts and Allen Ginsberg on Alan Watts' fairy boat, The Vallejo, discussing a premise of what should be done about their society. "the whole problem of whether to drop out or take over."

I would say every man has to eventually admit there is in fact a social structure and he is subject to it. – Then the question is asked, are you going to continue to live the culture you were taught and brought up with, or do you want to help bring about change in the structure? – If you so choose to bring about change then you are in the subculture. Well these men are saying we have all these people young and vibrant ready to change the social structure – And that’s what was going on in the 60’s, it wasn’t just about Love & Peace – and they are talking about the organization of these people to form a new culture from the subculture. Now Alan Watts says – well we can’t have a leader because that’s where the west screwed up it all has to just work. Leary thinks that people should drop out in small groups, but Ginsberg gives him a pretty hard time about it…LOL he says:
Ginsberg: For instance, you haven't dropped out, Tim. You dropped out of your job as a psychology teacher in Harvard. Now, what you've dropped into is, one: a highly complicated series of arrangements for lecturing and for putting on the festival...
Leary: Well, I'm dropped out of that.
Ginsberg: But you're not dropped out of the very highly complicated legal constitutional appeal, which you feel a sentimental regard for, as I do. You haven't dropped out of being the financial provider for Milbrook, and you haven't dropped out of planning and conducting community organization and participating in it.
These were all very wise men, you should take time out and read through it…..If you don’t know the words look them up!
Here!!

hippie:
A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.

I think that definition for Alan Watts or Alan Ginsberg would be incorrect. Especially if you read about their life. Highly educated people whose ideals were acknowledged & accepted by all forms & types of people. Usually people who are labeled as hippies, do not believe in labels..hehe

I would have to say i am not liberal, in the political sense. But life in its most basic form isn't based on politics, I think that's what the so called "hippies" of that era were trying to say. This generation watched first forms of tv, xtreme commercialism, and at least 3 wars. . .its obivious why these sorts of sects spawned from such changes.

The sad part about the whole situation is those people grew old & tired. Hell, a lot of them are dead. So now all we have left is these great documentaries of sorts of their reflections and discoveries. It may not be true for you, but even so, their words will live forever somewhere. And that should be respected.
