Let's say I think I can build the pyramids before the others on deity. That might be a disadvantage because I will get more unhappy faces than I can manage. Later in the game, the pyramids would probably be advantageous, but if I wait too long one of the AIs will certainly build it. If I get lucky it will be a neighbor and I can take it in a war (maybe) but otherwise the opportunity would be lost forever.

Should I build the pyramids?

If you really think you can do it and the city has nothing better to do the go for it..... I've never managed to buid any of the ancient wonders on deity.

If the colossus, the oracle, the hanging gardens are available then consider them instead.
My favourite deity wonder to get is the great library though.

If you go for the Pyramids and get beaten, will you have a bail out option.. ie another wonder to move straight to, or will you loose all those shields ?

NO, you shouldn't build the Pyramids, or any ancient wonder on Deity, for the simple reason that every turn you put your production into a wonder you are not putting it into expansion. I mean, you start out with enough of a disadvantage here without making it worse by choking off your early expansion. In the games I've seen and played at that level, it's not unusual to have the Pyramids finished around 1600BC; I guess you better start building it in 3000BC, right? I really do believe that going for wonders is a losing strategy on Deity - just get used to playing without them, as they're hardly needed to win. :)

let's say you can build it via a leader - do so. otherwise, go for expansion + military.

just my style ;)

That's what I was thinking, I've never played Zulu before :) . The military attribute may get me a leader (because elite promotions come sooner with a military civ).

If a happiness wonder is available when I have my 1st wonder, though, it's mighty tempting....

All of this is true but Pyramid could save a lot of prod per city since you need a granary in everyone of them... but it's only really beneficial if you play on pangea... think about it!

On Diety the only ancient wonder I would expend a leader on directly is Great Library.

I'd consider Hanging Gardens but only if I had already built an army, and then I would guess that I would actually be better served with a FP rush.

Pyramid is cool but not critical. By the time you build the pyramid, you are probably close to getting either monachy or republic. By then, food becomes a small issue. And expansion is probably pretty much done (depending on #civ and map size). Early expansion/war is much more important then that pyramid.

Come to think of it, Pyramids or not also depens a lot on your starting position. Lots of good land? Screw the damn thing! ****ty dry plains? Go get them!

No, don't do it. Unless you use a leader, chances are AIs will beat you to it. It doesn't matter much if I have a head start; AIs have always beat me to it (Deity level). Nowadays, I just wait for them to finish the Great Wonder and take it away from them by force.:)

On deity, to beat the AI to the Pyramids you would have to start building it immediatley after you make your first settler (and even they you have to have a good starting location). Now, because you are tying up 1 of your only 2 cities on building a wonder, by the time it is complete, you will probably have 4 cities will the AI has probably 15 cities! You've used up half of your production on something that you won't get any advantage from until you are already hopelessly behind the AI for it to do you any good.

Give masonry to your neighbor (if he doesn't already have it), let him build the pyramids, build up a military to take it from him right after he completes it.

Yup!::goodjob:

Give the closest neighbour Masonry and let him build the Pyramids, concentrate on Settlers and when the time is right build Barracks and then Chariots/Horsemen.

Let the enemy build the wonders for you. In Gotm8 I took all cities around Moscow because it was building the Great Library, it ended up building the Sun Tzu and I even helped them finish it by Mining some of the cities Plains for them. And the turn they finished the Sun Tzu in Moscow it was mine!
