I've needed to make a few posts where I would like to "test the waters" of an idea, and then delete the post afterwards to begin the "real" thread.

Also I've seen plenty of posts where someone asks the mods to delete their posts.

Is there anyway to enable users this option of deleting their own posts? The only drawback I could see would be if Sir Pleb went mad and decided to delete his posts containing priceless civ strategy, but I don't think that could happen. :)

How do you delete your own posts, I've seen others do it.
It's not possible for users to do at this forum.

Deleting the first post does indeed delete the entire thread.

I believe this is the reason TF has it disabled in the first place.

Whenever I see a post that says something to the effect of 'Please delete' I zap it as I see it, no matter what the forum. Unfortunately, that's the best way to handle the issue right now. Or PMing a mod to have it deleted for you.

I see problems with the delete your own posts. You can post an insulting message, and wait for a while, and delete it before a mod comes to check. Thus, with no evidence, you appear innocent.

Well, I'm pretty sure TF could set it up so that the post remained part of the thread. I'm not sure, tho.

Moderators have the choice of hard deleting or soft deleting a post. A hard delete means the post goes bye-bye. A soft delete means that it's no longer visible to regular users, and we have the option of showing the post. Now, if deletion was allowed to regular users, I don't know if it could just be set up to be a soft delete only, or if they users would have the same options the moderators have.

There was an accident in one forum. The first guy had posted abusive content. Then the second guy answered it in the same manner. After that, the first deleted his post. And the second guy was banned then mods read it.

Yeah, this is why we can't be given the privilege.

Well you could doublepost, or then realize that your comment was stupid or posting under the influence. It works on other forums

On phpBB, you can enable it so that only the most recent post can be deleted. I think this is mostly to keep the database clean(removing a post in the middle of a thread can make things a little sloppy) but as soon as someone posts after, the previous post is "locked in".

We can have a five minute delete thing, like the edit line.

How about having the ability to delete only when your post is last one in the thread. If someone else posts below you, then the delete would be disabled for your post. I have seen this in other forums. Deleting your own thread should only be used in the poster's last post in a thread.

I wanted to make a thread in the SG games forum, which usually is nothing but relative SG game threads, asking whether anyone would be interested in playing a variant that I don't think anyone would sign up for. I could make the thread useful by changing the title appropriately if people actually do sign up.

Just PM Padma, CT or Turner - they'll do that for you (or start a separate game thread after the sign-up thread). :)
