When i play civ1 and when i'm speaking to another leader i'm always looking for a nice tribute. But there are some times that the option of demand tribute cant be chosen. Why this happens? it is because the type of units?

50 GP? You mean gold pieces?

Indeed: GP = gold pieces.

But I'm afraid kirilov is incorrect. You can't demand tribute in republic or democracy. Otherwise, always. If they don't have 50 GP, I think they simply won't give you anything, or they'll give all the gold they have.

Its happens to me one time that i contacted the player with a diplomat (i was not in republic or democracy, i think...) and i couldn't demand the tribute...
Maybe if you contact the player with diplomats you can't demand the tribute?

It's both.

When the AI civ has less than 50 GPs, they refuse to pay any tribute. If you're powerful and they are weak enough you might try to threaten them - then you'll get all their gold and sometimes a tech.

And, as being said, if your government type is Republic or Democracy you won't be able to demand any tribute (talking about realism in games ... ;-)

That's why i dont like freedom governments: they can't put some respect in our weaker neighbours.

Yeah, can't they understand we simply want to liberate them?! The nerve of some civs ... ;)
