Depleted coalmine???

I, too, like the realism of the random depletion of resources.

I would like to see Firaxis work in concepts like a supply chain.

i.e. You'd need iron to allow your swordsmen/knights/... to heal. (I guess, in essense, you'd need it to repair the units' armor/swords, not heal the people.) You'd also need to retain Oil to keep your tanks and planes running.

I also feel that if you are building a unit that requires a resource and you run out in mid-production, you should have to change your production because you no longer have access to teh resource.

I've noticed that while resources almost always reappear somewhere when depleted, sometimes they never do. I was playing a custom made map with hardly any land and when a resource was gone it was gone for good. Note resources can go back to the orriganl tile it was used from even the momoent it depletes so I don't whats up.

I know, it's kinda hard to read that up there.

I'm used to seeing Iron go away a lot but I guess it was tweaked over the patches... now it pretty stable but you can still see it go bye bye..

I'd say if you have zero of a strategic resource you need to be making some plans on permanently acquiring one.

I can remember a few games where I was the first to get steam power only to find out there's no coal...

Whenever I acquire a tech that shows me a research and I have none of that resource, I locate the nearest source and go to war. It has some short-term pain but is much better in the long lun as you don't have to pay loads of gpt for the resource that you desperately need, and you can never fight that civ because you will lose your resource and not be able to build reinforcements. Resources and Wonders are the only reasons I ever start a war.

You just weren't noticing where they turned up. It's impossible for resources to disappear entirely. Their number is pre-determined in the editor, and there will always be the same amount at the end of the game as there was at the first.

PS OK, I didn't think about the custom map. That would be entirely possible. They just wouldn't disappear below a certain number.

I've never seen a resource disappear and NOT reappear somewhere on the map. Sometimes you really have to look for the new source, as it appeared in enemy territory (maybe hidden underneath a city tile) or nuetral land (maybe some undiscovered island).

I could think of cases where it wouldn't reappear. Like oil only appears on what, desert and tundra? If there is no desert and you build forests on all the tundra, then if oil dissappeared, it would have no place to go.

I was under the impression that resources 'remembered' the base tile and would reappear even if changed? I believe I've seen coal (or rubber) appear on jungle that has been cleared...

One problem is that the default civ3 graphics for some resources are really hard to see, even after control+shift+M. The PTW craphic for coal, for example, is a lot easier to see in a jungle than the 3 little dots in the civ3 graphic. And of course there are mods. (But then if your game crashes you will see comments like "If your game is unmodded upload it and I will look at it." :(
