In spite of having some experience with Civ IV, I still have not managed to track the changes taking place in a captured city. Perhaps this is caused by me being used to capture AI's cities, rather than having my own cities being captured.

However, a few of my cities were captured in my last Emperor game (fortunately, I was able to regain them), but I did not track whether any buildings were destroyed (I think some were).

Can anyone shed light on this issue? If some buildings may be destroyed when a city is captured, then which exactly? Thanks in advance.

All national wonders, and all buildings that generate culture except the academy are destroyed automatically when a city is captured. All world wonders survive when a city is captured, but they will no longer produce culture. All other buildings have a chance of being destroyed when the city is captured, but have a chance of surviving.

I see. Thanks. I suppose one should avoid having his cities captured almost at any cost.

or just don't try to build everything in cities you cannot defend?

Generally it is not a problem of defending a particular city, but rather a problem of me to pay enough attention to the defence, as I think too much about whom to attack next.

For instance, in my current game I was getting ready to attack Germans, but instead they attacked me right in the middle of my preparations. They were able to capture a couple of cities (one of them being my capital) and I had difficult times regaining those.

The good thing was that I destroyed Germans not long after that.
