DESTROYING Cd-r

Best way ? leave em in the SUN.

Never tried to destroy one before ... I usually prefer the opposite. But I'd say a bit of coarse sandpaper would do the trick.

There are mechanical shredders you can buy that specifically destroy CDs. They don't shred them so much as scratch them to unreadability.

If you want to scratch the disc so it can't be read, you need to go entirely through the plastic layer to get to the data layer. Alternately, many CD-Rs have the data layer really close to the back of the label side, so scratching the label would work.

For more fun, toss 'em in the microwave.

Sandpaper + hammer + fire.

You might even be able to get it to the point where nobody can tell what it used to be.

Just break the thing in half. Don't get any of it in your eyes. Even if you give all the pieces to the NSA they probably couldn't get anything useful off it then. It certainly wouldn't be worth the effort to even try.

Thanks for the tips guys, hey would soaking them in acetone, then hitting them with a hammer a couple of times and then breaking them to 3 pieces work.

The data is stored on the shiny film material. Break the CD in half then with both halves of the film material burn it with some paper / wood and then flush the ashes down the drain.

Seriously thou, for senative data I leave the thing in the sun once the data material degrades about 25%-35% over most of the surface and chuck em out.
