The city will be destroyed if you attack/capture the city with a size of one.

So attack only cities that have units between their walls. Or capture cities of size one (without units)..

If you want to destroy one of your cities you should take off al the food. The citysize will decrease to one. Than move all your units out of the city and have hope that an other civ will destroy your city.

You can also build a settler in a city after starving it down to size one. The last citizen is then transformed into a settler and the city disappears. (Of course you must not let the city grow again before the settler is finished. Rush building it is good:)).

Don't always bet on it though. It doesn't always happen. 1 out of 10 the city will still be retained, very irritating.

Strange! I abandon cities by building settlers regularly. It has never failed for me (except once when I tired to abandon a city with a working Great Library. Then the game crashed:lol: ). Maybe I am just extremely lucky, but I suspect it could be another explanation for your observation. I don't know what the explanation would be though:undecide:. Could it be that your cities sometimes grow at the turn the settler is finished or something?
